Yeah, fuck that. Pick a new mask and MO and make sure you get away with it. I kinda thought it would've been cool, after Randy died, if one of the killers survived and played a Randy-ish, but also Hannibal Lecter-ish role in the series. But they kill 'em every time. That was kinda the original plan with one of the Scream 3 scripts. Stu had survived the TV falling on his face (even tho there's no reference to him still being alive in 2) and he was in prison and kinda giving instructions to the new killer and actually lead his own cult of some sort. It was a really messed up twist in the end that all the "victims" were followers of Stu and weren't really dead. I don't really like the idea of just pretending that a character who clearly was killed off actually survived and expecting us to believe they intended it that way. Plus, Stu was no mastermind.

I agree. It wouldn't even be an original idea for the series as theyve already done that with Roman. It was hard to buy then and it'd be even harder to buy now.

I understand it's a movie... But I don't get why any of the main characters would ever stay or return to that town... 😆 After part 1 I never would've looked back.. They’ll probably make a joke or two about that.

Critics Cream for 5cream! This will surely usher in more sequels... They have their work cut out for them on keeping it fresh... Not to sound like a wet blanket. I'm kinda half and half on this entry tbh. How many damn times can 3 people survive a serial killer? Got a feeling someone is biting it.

But we've seen enough footage of each of them in the different trailers to be sure that the theory that one of them will die in the cold open, Drew Barrymore style, is incorrect.

No spoilers: I just got back from it. For the most part, I liked it. Easily better than 3, debating on how it ranks with the rest. I loved the opening and most of the phone calls, and there's an entire sequence of false scares waiting for the killer to appear that I thought was both funny and suspenseful at the same time (which perfectly sums up the franchise, eh?) There's a lot of cute references to previous movies and fan service. Old cast was handled well, but new cast left a bit to be desired. As for the whodunnit, ironically, even though I went out of my way to go into this movie completely blind, not watching trailers or looking at posters or anything, I called the killer in the first 20 minutes (not because it was obvious so much as knowing what type of Scream-clues to look out for after four movies). Their motive was clever and modern, though they could have gone farther with it. Now, spoiler time: -I actually wrote a Scream fan script like 8 years ago that involved a bastard child of Billy Loomis. I almost feel like calling up Jackie Childs, but at least they did it differently. Weird we never find out or see who the mother is.
-speaking of Billy, not sure how I feel about his ghost popping up in mirrors. Cool to see Skeet again, but a bit silly
-ironically, the only new character I particularly liked ended up being the killer. The new kids were kinda anonymous assholes. How are we supposed to like Cuba Gooding Jr Jr after he accuses his gf of being the killer while making out? And his sister, the supposed new Randy, was a harassive biatch.
-I figured Dewey would die eventually, but I didn't expect it to hurt so much to watch. I grew up with Scream the way some people grow up with Star Wars, so watching him die so brutally actually made me tear up. RIP
-like I was saying with the killer's motive, if you want to call out toxic fandoms, do it. Why weren't these killers ranting about forced diversity and politics? I'm not sure what their grievance with "Stab 8" even was. Still, it was amusing.

Seeing this one tomorrow, but re: masterofallgoons’s point about the soft focus of the fourth one I just caught a few mins. on TV and it looked even worse than I remembered! It’s just so obnoxious on the eyes. I’d be interested in knowing who came up with that decision.

One of the characters does mention the "flashy MTV direction" of then-modern horror so I think the palette HAS to be part of the joke.

Saw it. Ehh. I think I like it more than 4. I’m not even sure if I like it more than 3, which isn’t good but is kind of silly fun. This one seemed so much, so early, to get caught in its own trap: Meta is not enough, you still have to write good characters, good lines, a good plot. And the more I think about this movie, the more I think it didn’t have those things. The new characters in particular have all the depth of computer paper, existing only to be sliced and diced by Ghostface. Neve Campbell is always a delight to see; why again did she never become a big star? But she gets little to do, Courteney Cox even less, and even Han Solo’s Dewey’s death didn’t move me at all. In fact, all the original gang could have been dropped from the movie with barely any plot changes. Also, funny question, but did the murderer seem pulled out of a hat to anyone else? Seemed like they could have applied the same motive to a bunch of people here, and nothing particularly stood out about the killer. My reaction was frankly “oh yeah, so that’s who it is, who’s that again?”—the exact wrong reaction for the end of a mystery. I even preferred my goofy, not-worked-out idea for a twist: The girl who gets attacked in the beginning is the killer. Ghosty never actually attacked her; she wounded herself, missing vital organs, after hallucinating the attack. After all, her sister is having hallucinations; I thought for sure the twist would be the younger sister also has them, but of Ghostface. So much for that. Oh well. I wish they’d used the ideas we came up with here. And here.

I wish they’d used the ideas we came up with here. And here. The killer felt less pulled out of a hat than 2 and especially 3 (a literally "who?" Moment for me). Like I said, I called them in the first 20 minutes. The awkward first greeting gave it away, and then them accusing each other later felt performative. Richie/Jack Quaid had a pretty big role, much bigger than Mickey and Roman. Amber/Mikey Madison didn't really have a personality until she was revealed, though. The anonymity of the kids was definitely the biggest weakness of the movie for me. Really makes you appreciate Jamie Kennedy and Matthew Lillard coming along and making their characters stand out with possibly less screentime.
The motives are always a little interchangable in these movies. Pretty much anyone in Scream 3 could have been Sidney's long lost sibling, sans Lance Henrikson I guess. They did kinda set it up with Richie binging Stab and ridiculing the 8th that he was a secret Stab-head.
I'm thinking the hallucinating was the crazed Loomis side of the sister. Jenna Ortega's wasn't related to that family. The opening victim as the killer was done in one particular Argento movie I like.
