Personally I thought the Freddy that took humor out of killing teens was creepier. Like in parts 3-5. Taking joy in others pain, suffering and dying is scary to me.
Except in Freddys Dead. He was too silly in that film.

Dark humored Freddy. It’s why he didn’t work in the remake. They went back to when he was serious and made him boring.

That's a tough call. I enjoy Freddy's quips in the dark-humored sequels but I think I give the edge to serious Freddy. He was great being that way in 1, 2 and New Nightmare.

I am indifferent but since there was only 2 votes for Serious Freddy I added mine to make it tied.

Yeah, I think it's somewhere in the middle. He's still got his evil smile and a couple of one-liners, and he still clearly enjoys being sadistic and relishes in terrifying and killing his victims, but he doesn't turn it into a vaudeville act. I think Nightmare on Elm Street 2 is pretty much terrible, but I mostly like that version of the character. The 3rd one gets the balance right, for the most part.

I really only liked that version of him in 3 and 4. 5 was where things started going downhill and as stated from FOES, he kinda sucked in Freddy’s Dead.

Like I said, even in a terrible movie like Freddy's Revenge, that version of the character felt right. But after 3 he got progressively sillier until 6 when he was literally doing Looney Tunes routines... which might have made sense and been kinda funny if the movie wasn't so bad at trying to be funny. But I still have some affection for 4 and 5.

Serious Freddy.
My issue isn't with England's performance and humor in 3, it is that the nightmare stuff starts to feel more cartoon-ish and goofy. I do think it was necessary to get more creative and add a bit more personality to the character for the sequels, but Freddy in the original is the best version imo. He is much less scary in sequels, especially after Freddy's Revenge. I dislike the story there, but Freddy is still scary in it.

The first two were the scariest. The idea of Freddie possessing someone was a good one.

Some sequels go too far with him literally talking to the camera, but overall I voted Dark Humor Freddy. Mainly because a twisted sense of humor is ingrained in the character, even in the first film.
2 and the remake are probably him at his most serious and, well, most boring.

By the time he was making like David Caruso with the sunglasses, he was not very scary.

He is a child molester after all-should we really be chuckling with him?
I wonder if Freddy vs Jason would have been better if it was serious Freddy. Maybe not.
I think some of the humor was really a groaner in the series...
"What's the matter Joey, tongue-tied?"
Chucky did that too. He had jokes in the first movie but he sure changed with Bride of Chucky. He was like a road movie character.
John Waters in Seed of Chucky--that scene with him watching outside...I never thought an issue of Fangoria would be used in such a way.

Part of the reason I voted jokester Freddy is Englund gave a better performance, he was a bit raw as an actor in the first one. Also some of his dark humor was really mean spirited. Why should we fight? We're old friends, you and I...

I do prefer parts 1-2 Freddy, but I like both.
