Again I don’t think the remake is all that bad. I just didn’t like when the remake got meta. I know it was probably meant to be done as a joke, but everything up to that point had been serious.
Tie.

1960. I found the whole storyline in the 2002 version with him trying to save his dying girlfriend unnecessary. There's no reason they couldn't have just left the plot of the original intact.

1960. Just what I have posted (or thought) about most if not all of these classic/modern competitions: No Contest.

I don’t remember much about the remake so I’ll go with the 1960 version since it was/is memorable. Rod Taylor was great.
“What have you done? Thousands of years of building and rebuilding, creating and recreating so you could let it crumble to dust. A million years of sensitive men dying for their dreams, for what? So you can swim, and dance, and play... You, all of you, I'm going back to my own time; I won't even bother to tell of the useless struggle and their hopeless future, but at least I can die among men!“

I haven't seen either in a while, but I remember liking the original better. The original is also closer to the book I believe which helps in this case. The remake tried to get "too cute" so to speak with it's additions.

The George Pal Classic.
There were too many missteps in the remake.
Rod Taylor's scientist seeking a better world is certainly more compelling than Guy Pearce trying to keep his girlfriend from getting killed. Now we know what crossing H.G. Wells with a Harlequin Romance looks like.
Worst of all were the leaping cgi Morlocks.
There were some great visuals and the hologram in place of the talking rings in the first picture worked very well, but the movie simply does not have the emotional impact of the 1960 version.

1960. I found the whole storyline in the 2002 version with him trying to save his dying girlfriend unnecessary. There's no reason they couldn't have just left the plot of the original intact. Actually I found that part to be what I liked most about the remake... I hated the story line in the original... " I'm not happy with the time I was born into..." Oh please, we all hate when we were born and wish we could live in different times... but you don't see everyone giving up on our lives because of it. However, We all can relate to wanting to save someone we've lost... In the remake I also liked... The time machine better, with the time field surrounding it, it actually looked like it could travel through time... The original looked like a spinning snow sled attached to a platform. Being able to see the huge jump through time into the future was great too... And the musical score was fantastic, especially, during the time travel sequence when he decides to travel into the near future to find out why he couldn't save her. With that said... I prefer the original when it comes to... Seeing George having fun, while exploring the phenomenon of Time Travel by watching the dresses get shorter and other similar event... And the future storyline was better as well... The ending was better too, where George comes back to dinner with his friends and then returns to the future. I can't decide which one I like better... Both had their good points and bad ones too.

I went with the remake. Both were very good.
1960 had a more watchable and thus better cinematography, and it was a good story with good characters.
2002 suffered from worse cinematography, going too modern in its "Vegas arcade" special effects stupidity that so many new movies make the mistake of doing, but other than that, it was better in every way to the original. The librarian character was a very good touch and made the final difference. That's how close it was to rate them.
1960 8/10 2002 8.1/10
