Two old school war classics. And yes, I know one’s not a remake of the other. This is just a random showdown.
I love both, but give the edge to The Train.

Paths of Glory - 7.5/10
The Train - 5.5/10
The Train is a clunky effort by one of the most inconsistent directors in movie history. It is poorly paced, Burt Lancaster is miscast and the story is told in a dull way. Paul Scofield is excellent though.

Seconds I dislike mostly because I think Rock Hudson gives a completely unconvincing performance.

I do love John Randolph in the opening act. The main reason I don’t hold the film in the high esteem that many do, though, is that hippie party sequence which goes on forever. I haven’t seen Black Sunday but I would second your recommendation of the other Frankenheimer films, and add All Fall Down. I do like The Train a lot more than you too, though!

I like The Train quite a lot but it’s no contest - Paths of Glory by far.

That is another aspect of the movie that holds it back. I think I ended up rating it a 6/10, which is because I agree that it does have some great stuff about it. So it really just depends on if you enjoy the hippie sequence and if you like Rock Hudson in the role. I'll add All Fall Down to my watchlist.

I like both movies, but I'm giving my vote to Paths of Glory, a grim and more centered study about the insanity of war and the corruption of those who profit most from it.
The Train is also very good, but in the end it's a standard action WWII film more in common with Von Ryan's Express and The Dirty Dozen.

This is a hard decision for me, I really enjoy both films. Even though they are both “war” films one is action oriented and the other more of an anti war drama about the futility of war. I like the long tracking shots and wide angle shots in the Train and the emphasis on preserving a nations art treasures. I do like Lancaster but I have to agree that maybe he wasn’t the perfect choice for the film. I think thats really the only aspect of the film that contributes to pushing Paths of Glory ahead in this competition. Kirk Douglas is excellent in Paths and of course the direction is top notch by Kubrick. I’ve also been intrigued by most aspects of “The Great War” for some time and the unoriginal military doctrines that were pursued in the Western Front. The top command continued throughout the war to pursue obsolete tactics in their fight and how futile the movements were. Gain ground only to lose it the next day. This is shown in the film.

I didn't like "the Train" at all.. It's muddled, boring, and I don't care for movies like that; mechanical obstacles that always get fixed, eventually.

I used to be better at picking these things to make them close…oh well.
