The most debated and controversial topic on IMDb's Friends forum is now here! And it's time for an official poll to settle things once and for all.
So, were Ross Geller and Rachel Green on a break when Ross slept with Chloe, the copy girl?

Rachel said she wanted a break. So yes they were on a break.

Rachel said she wanted a break. So yes they were on a break. So far, according to the poll one person already disagrees with that assessment. This should be fun.

I don't understand why it's a debate. The dialogue went something like:
Rachel: We should take a break.
Ross: You're right. Let's get something to eat.
Rachel: No, a break from us.
She said it twice, so what it the counter argument there?

The topic made me chuckle, so now I feel the need to say that yes, they were on a break.

It its not a debate really. I think the debate is more is being on a break the same as broken up. Did Ross cheat or did he not cheat. I think that is the debate people are having. Of course i may be wrong. Exactly. Some people treat it like a court case. If approached that way, of course, the evidence is clear. Technicalities all in place. I think the more nuanced conversation acknowledges what each person wanted, hoped for, and defined that time as. Did Ross "cheat"? Of course not. But I completely understand Rachel's confusion, anger, and devastation. It doesn't matter if it's reasonable, it's love. The big takeaway is: Define your terms, people! That makes a bit more sense. Neither one of them communicated very well. Rachel invited a man over to her apartment who obviously wanted to sleep with her and Ross knew about it. If she didn't want Ross to sleep with another woman, she should have realized he might come to certain conclusions when he found out that guy was at her place. Meanwhile, after Ross slept with the girl at the photocopy place, he should have been open and honest about what he did and why instead of going around town, trying to cover it up. The whole thing would have been avoided if they set certain boundaries before the break. I should mention that I didn't like Ross or Rachel very much. They annoyed me in almost every episode.

I liked Ross and Rachel more than Chandler and Monica. I thought it took way too long for them to get back together and with too many false hints at a reconciliation. They should have gotten back together after he said her name by mistake at his wedding.

Yes, because Rachel was pretty clear about that, and should have just let it go not even a season later.

A break isn't the same thing as a breakup, geez.
A breakup means things are over; a break suggests there's a future, something to be continued later - why fuck that up by sleeping with someone else?
That relationship was toxic and overrated anyway. Their dynamic never made any sense to me.

Rachel: No, a break from us.She said it twice, so what it the counter argument there? There is no logical argument. There were no rules agreed to as to what a break is. Under those circumstances, a break is a breakup. Otherwise, a break is for coffee.

a relationship that has endured any time needs clear communication or that in order for one to begin. breaking up is completely different. considered finality. on a break is fraught with potential for misunderstanding if there is any hope for a future. are we dating others. are we defining limits to behaviours. and what type. just dating around or what. to be continued because there is something here? or am i nothing special so anything goes? or anything goes if you don't find about it cause they don't want you doing the same thing. some were very good liars. well said also empress of glasgow in posting. seeing others who may have potential is certainly to be considered before the altar. thats why they say if anyone has any reason, let him speak now or forever hold his peace. how may times i missed what could have been because i made the mistake of staying in the wrong relationship. not necessarily bad, but i was young and still didn't know the right things to look for in a lasting relationship. many great opportunities to learn and to grow with each other. have fun. share life and love. and there were so many girls who needed to be clearer in what they had in mind at the right time. and communicated that clearly to me. lets see where this goes. a loving open heart. only years later would some tell me. when if i had heard it then, it could have changed everything

Of course they were. Rachel was a spoiled brat and a shrew. She would have banged her co-worker like she did every other guy she met eventually. Once she knew Ross banged that hottie she preferred tormenting him to banging the other guy.
Only hypocritical simpletons deny they were on a break.

And maybe it doesn't, so why should Ross not consider it a break-up? Especially since Mark came over to her apartment the same night. He should just wait for Rachel to make up her mind? Can only Rachel decide what it means and how one should behave? Well, then she should've explained it more clearly. But she didn't because it was said in the heat of the moment. And Rachel apparently thought it was the same as a break-up, she told Monica she and Ross "broke up" and asked Ross if she could be his girlfriend again.
