As you know I am not all that fond of the remake, but I don't think the original is anything special either and they aren't hugely far apart in my ratings. The are further apart in rating on IMDB than I would have expected.

Cat People has never been my favorite Lewton picture. That honor falls to The Body Snatcher.
The remake has color, widescreen and graphic violence, but I prefer the nightmare shadows of the original and Simone Simon's enigmatic performance. I haven't seen the 1982 film in years. It probably could stand a re-evaluation.
