1979 - 5/10
2005 - 5/10
Both are extremely mediocre imo, but I dislike the way the final act is handled in the remake compared to the original.

Unusually, I actually preferred the 2005 version. The 1979 felt very much like a movie where nothing much happened.
Amityville II: The Possession trumps both.

I like the first half of the remake more and the second half of the original more. I'll add Amityville 2 to my watchlist. I have seen Amityville 3-D, and wow, that movie is bad.

Easy. The remake. I found the original to be kind of boring. I even read the book before I saw the original. I lowered my expectations when I heard the book and movie were fictionalized.
The remake knows it’s not based on a true story so they added whatever crazy shit they could come up with and it worked for that VERY REASON!! Ryan Reynolds was really good in this too. I’m so used to seeing him playing comedic roles, but he is really good in this!!!

And the family leaves more of an impression than their counterparts in the other films. Not a likeable bunch to be sure, but memorable all the same.

It sort of works as OTT cheese in sections, but it also has a lot of stuff that is just idiotic. The movie has way too many writing problems. I consider The Evil Dead OTT cheese, but that movie is well-written and creepy while being cheese. Maybe the 2 sequels are better examples. They are OTT cheese and good at it, Amityville II isn't. Of course the family is going to be more memorable when you make them all ridiculous. That isn't a good thing imo. \ For the record I am not big on cheesy 1980s horror, though there are exceptions.

I certainly agree that the Evil Dead movies accomplish this with far greater skill, but that franchise is in a different league to the Amityville one, the most memorable aspect of which it the exterior look of the house itself.

So you just like all cheesy '80s horror movies? I ask because this would be an example of a bad cheesy horror movie (imo), whereas Basket Case would be an example of good cheesy '80s horror movie. I would say I dislike the original Amityville Horror, the remake and the first sequel all equally. That is a first btw. That is to say they are all equally mediocre imo. I agree that the exterior of the house is easily the most memorable aspect of this franchise.

I have a great fondness for cheesy 80s horror in general - Night of the Creeps, TerrorVision, Troll, Night of the Comet, etc. Some more than others, of course, but it's a style I derive great satisfaction from. The original Amityville Horror doesn't do a lot for me either. Found it rather dull actually. Definitely wouldn't fall into the category of cheesy horror though, given how seriously it takes itself.

I agree. The cheesiness of the sequel through me off a bit. The sequels definitely veered off in a different direction. Much more in-your-face style of horror. I assume you were expecting something more in line with the original going into Amityville II? By the way, did you like the 2005 remake?
