The sequels definitely veered off in a different direction. Much more in-your-face style of horror. I assume you were expecting something more in line with the original going into Amityville II? By the way, did you like the 2005 remake?No. It's been years since I watched it but I personally enjoyed it more than the original - a rare thing in my case given my preference for 70s/80s horror.
