I'm guessing you weren't around in 1973 when The Exorcist was new. I guarantee, it scared the hell out of people. As I stood in line to see the movie, the first audience came out in absolute silence looking as if they had been lobotomized.
You can't expect a 50 year old movie like The Exorcist to be scary to a modern audience just like you wouldn't expect the silent Phantom of the Opera to effect viewers in the 1950's.
Anyway, I'm glad I saw The Exorcist when I did, before the avalanche of slasher horror films satiated todays audiences and sicken people in their stomachs but don't elevate their heart levels.
