San Marino had an absolute cracker of an Olympics. 5 Athletes, 3 of them won a medal.
Australia did well, a bit better than expected in several events, but a few poor results (especially in team sports) where we should’ve done much better.
As always though - New Zealand punching well above its weight, and especially per capita.

Proud of Team USA for topping the medal count despite various setbacks. The Biles meltdown, Men's track was a disaster, the USWNT mailed in the Olympics and somehow we still came out on top. Congratulations to all the athletes on their hard work and perseverance. Article by Michael Johnson: Tokyo Olympics: United States top medal table but athletics 'dramatically underperformed' www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/58136596Wish GB’s athletes has “underperformed” that badly - they didn’t win a single gold.

Going by their own lofty expectations, the US men's track did have a terrible games. Botched relays, finger pointing, only one gold-- on the final race of the final day.

I'm amazed at how USA consistently dominates at the Olympics, even when they were slightly "off" from their usual self.
I think in Olympic history, USA rarely doesn't top the medal count. China beat them in 2008.

I said continent not country, You do know that continent is not the same things as a country right ? Also the continent of Europe does not have an anthem but the European Union does its Ode to Joy lyrics by Friedrich Schiller in 1784 and music by Beethoven in 1824. Also the continent of Europe and the European union is not the same thing.

Some great stats, but this comment regarding the US men's track is wrong: They won their final race, the 4x400. The US women were unbelievable, finishing with 23 gold medals. If they were their own country, they would've finished fourth in the world! (Technically third because it would've divided the overall US tally) The US once again won the most golds, the most overall medals, and also had 26 4th place finishes. What an incredible showing for what I called a 'disaster' a week ago. Complaining about men's track or the USWNT sleepwalking through the Olympics are clearly the firstest of first world problems. Watching the closing ceremonies last night was a final reminder of why I love the Olympic games. The effort, the human endeavor involved in all aspects of the games is staggering-- and it's all positive. The Olympics are the best kind of nationalism, if only we could settle all disputes with a race or a game instead of inventing new ways to kill each other. You want national prestige and respect, this is how you do it. Not bombs or cold war bullshit. Let's play volleyball to decide this. The ceremony was spectacular, the mood was perfect, the Japanese put on an amazing games despite all the hardships. It's just a tragedy their people couldn't enjoy their nation's best ever showing at an Olympic games because their living nightmare next door neighbors had to ruin it for everyone. The US volleyball player last night during the ceremony, crying her eyes out as she looked at her gold. That sums up the mood of a closing ceremony perfectly. It's joy, relief, spectacle, the pinnacle of success; but there is a sadness to the end of the journey. This goal you set for yourself, the focus, the dedication you put into it for years; it's completed. You've scaled the mountain and now you have to find that next challenge. It's life, encapsulated in a moment. So glad the cameras caught it. Again, congratulations to all the athletes of all competing nations for their effort and success (and by that I mean simply making the Olympic Games), and a special thank you to Tokyo for putting on a memorable show 'in these unprecedented times.' The Olympics should make us all proud as citizens of this modern world, regardless of medal count. If only our governments would try half as hard on solving issues like hunger, homelessness and social inequality, imagine what we could accomplish.

Sport climbing anyone? I thought it was a worthy addition to Olympic sports. A reasonable spread of countries are represented at the elite level and there is a mature international competition. The womens knockout phase was fun to watch, with a small level of tension and personal struggle. Janja Garnbrett is a superstar and performed on the night, wiping out the rest of the field in the boulder phase. I loved it. Second favourite only to the athletics. My two gripes though are the scoring system and combining all three events. While the scoring is exciting it seems incredibly unfair. For athletes placed in gold medal positions to then be relegated to no medal just because 1 other athlete does better seems a little unfair. Also I think in the next games when the speed and bouldering + lead are separated into two distinct events it will also be fairer. Atm it would be like having Elaine Thomson-Herah compete against Sifan Hassan over the 100mm, 5000m and 10000m combined to see who would come out on top. Very exciting event though, I look forward to seeing, hopefully, more coverage on our TVs.

Algeria's Fethi Nourine and his coach Amar Benikhlef have been suspended for 10 years by the International Judo Federation (IJF) after withdrawing from the Tokyo Olympics to avoid facing an Israeli opponent. Nourine, 30, who was in the men's -73kg class, said at the time that his political support for the Palestinian cause made it impossible to compete. The IJF said the pair "with malicious intent" used the Games as a "platform for protest and promotion of political and religious propaganda". The governing body's disciplinary commission said it was a "clear and serious breach" of its statutes, code of ethics and the Olympic charter. Nourine was due to face Sudan's Mohamed Abdalrasool in his first bout and a win would have paired him with Israel's Tohar Butbul. At the time he was provisionally suspended and the Algerian Olympic Committee withdrew their accreditation and sent them home. The ban covers all IJF events and activities through to 23 July 2031, though they can appeal against the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The incident was not the first time that Nourine had withdrawn from competition to avoid facing an Israeli opponent. He pulled out of the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo for the same reason. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/58556940Good.
