I wonder if there is something like this going on here in Canada as well. This morning there were four or five different channels showing the Olympic Games (CBC, RDS, more than one of the TSN channels) and all of them were showing USA vs France in Basketball!
In Australia there are 2 free to air channels showing the most popular sports, and a claimed 45 streams through the networks streaming service. In tonights Australia-USA soccer game the main channel had commentary by Australians but the streamed version (in HD) had English commentators. Other networks are getting maybe 10 second grabs of finals for their news, and have to find the parents of local winners to interview.

Idiot Australian women soccer players?
Once they saw how good the US defence was they kept the ball down one end for the last 15 minutes. Rivetting display of passing between the 4 defensive players while the US was happy to have a rest knowing they would progress on a draw or win. Australia is hoping they will be one of the two top teams after the first two progress.

Simone biles just withdrew from the gymnastics team finals. That's a real shame. Not word on the actual cause yet. She apparently left with the medical staff, but they aren't confirming whether or not it was an injury. She hasn't yet withdrawn from individual competition.

She changed a complicated vault mid-air to a simple 1 1/2 and something happened then.

These Olympics have been kind of a disaster for the US. And as I say that, we're still leading in the overall medal count and tied for second in Gold. But still, some surprising poor finishes across the board thus far.

Yeah, NY Times had just had an article on her pressure issues. Apparently she has said that the pressure got to her. Pretty disappointing. No mas? She better retire now. That's the worst thing I can imagine an athlete saying. Seriously, I'd rather hear an athlete admit to being on the take. "This is too hard, I don't feel like doing it anymore." Even ten years ago she'd be eaten alive in the press for this, today she'll be praised for bringing attention to mental health issues. I'm not going to rip her too much because I'm not some huge gymnatics fan or anything, but this is a bad look. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. The crew can't take the pressure anymore, so somebody better learn how to fly this thing real quick." Doctor walks out in the middle of open heart surgery. "Doctor are you alright?" "I can't take it anymore, you guys wrap up."

On the one hand she's gonna get all kinds of sympathy and congratulations for prioritizing her mental health... but on the other this knocks her down from her greatness status pretty much immediately. Handling the pressure is one of the most elemental things required of an athlete. I don't think she's officially withdrawn from individual competition yet, so may there can be some redemption still to come, but it was likely her last olympics anyway, and I think this shluld solidify it.

She has to withdraw from the individual. She quits on her team but still goes for solo gold? That would be even worse. Wow. And I called these Olympics a disaster for the US before this.

All this talk that she’s the greatest of all time. Skill wise she may be, but this seems like weak sauce. All I could think of was Jordan, Kobe, Jeter, David Ortiz, Michael Phelps, Tom Brady, athletes that came up big in big moments. Lot of pressure to put on a relatively young girl but she’s no killer.

That's the thing though, I would somewhat understand if she was some up and coming phenom who cracked under the pressure. She's a living legend. Look at her résumé. All of the the sudden she can't take the pressure? What the hell?

Thought she was maybe 18 or so but she’s 24. I don’t want to trash the girl, she’s obviously great, but now there’s a line separating her from the truly elite. Keri Strugg landed her vault on like a halfway amputated leg. Killer.

Agreed, her history speaks for itself. She isn't a disgrace and she isn't a terrible human being, but this has to be brought up in the first sentence of every discussion about her legacy. An all time great who inexplicably quit on her team in the middle of a competition because she 'didn't have it' or whatever that day. Imagine you and I were collaborating on a project that would land us a huge contract and during the negotiation I told you it was too much pressure and walked out. No matter how long you had worked with me, would you ever look at me the same way again? And yeah ironically this elevates Strug to even more legendary status, as if that were possible. This is my favorite Olympic story of all time. If the Olympic spirit could be summed up in a sentence, that would be it. Forget the medals, the endorsements, the fame, all that stuff. Represent your country and compete to the best of your ability. Simone Biles just did the opposite, in the middle of a team competition no less.

I would think so too. She was overheard giving a pep talk to the team, telling them they're great and saying they can do it without her. She said she felt like she could cost them a medal if she went ahead. From her perspective then, you could say she's doing it for the team, but she certainly also crumbled under the pressure. It's undeniable.

That’s what I’m thinking. I’m wondering if she picked up some minor injury on that vault. And she was afraid that she would put up mediocre scores for the rest of the team competition. And she couldn’t deal with the idea of that happening. If this was just mental pressure/mental health alone it’ll tarnish her reputation. Short term there will be kudos from the mental health community. But long term it’ll damage her legacy if this was just a pressure thing alone. There’s no way it couldn’t. There’s probably going to be more details reported to this story in the coming days.
