It's already received an R rating for 'strong horror violence and gruesome images".

Well... It's a James Wan movie, so a lot of people are going to say it's great and I won't really understand why.

Wan has a solid eye for horror and this looks fine.

It’s very odd that critics seem to like this one, but users don’t. I keep hearing it’s more of a comedy. Ummm ok James Wan’s movies ALWAYS had humor in them. I think some people need to go back and rewatch the first Insidious and first Conjuring. I mean yeah some of the parts are played for laughs, but JFC they act like the humor ruins it.

I watched this movie this morning. I never really cared cared any of James Wan's movies, but I thought this was especially terrible. Maybe terrible isn't fair, but it's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. I think what some people may be talking about is that it's so silly and so dumb as it goes on that it can't be taken seriously, but the tone is still played with a fairly straight face. The very slick, glossy, digital cinematography doesn't appeal to me, but I know that some people have said that it looks great, but I imagine all the CGI locations and digital blood and gore probably disappointed plenty of viewers as much as it did me. By the time we get to the jail cell scene where the lead character is attacked by Zoe Bell dressed up like some 80s mullet-wearing biker chick, and a 70s afro-wearing jump suit clad blaxploitation character; any and all semblance of this trying to elicit any genuine scares or emotion have been long destroyed, and yet the movie continues in its psuedo-earnest ways. If this had been played as comedically as it should have been at that stage then at least it would have been fun and self aware along with how stupid it was, but I found myself laughing at how dumb it all was rather than with it. I can't speak for James Wan fans because I don't count myself among them, but my guess is that the level of complete absurdity was disappointing to his fans that wanted it to be a bit straight forward... although I kinda feel like he was taking this seriously and just failed at it. But critics seem to be pretty split and/or luke warm. Yes, on Rotten Tomatoes 77% of critics gave it a passing grade, but on metacritic it sits at a 55, so those who recommended it still seem to be unenthusiastic.

Don’t they review video games too, or am I thinking of something else? I didn’t think the movie was terrible, but it’s not one of Wan’s strongest movies. I’ve heard it compared to the Dark Half and I can actually see that a little bit.

It was fucking great. Bonkers, stupid, goddamn ridiculous yet Wan is 100% in control of his craft. Amazing camera movements, memorable trashy soundtrack; a complete ode to Giallo, 80s schlock, Carpenter, Raimi, Cronenberg, Argento etc...had a blast! Alter your expectations, this will be divisive: a love it or hate it type deal. It's his horror version of Aquaman, if you enjoyed that I'm sure you'll enjoy this. If Aquaman wasn't for you.....forget it, Aquaman is prestige and tame in comparison.

I’ve heard it compared to the Dark Half and I can actually see that a little bit. I think they have video game reviews, but like Rotten Tomatoes they don't really review anything but simply aggregate reviews from critics in various publications. Rotten Tomatoes uses a scale of a percentage of critics either voting yay or nay, while Metacritic has critics submit a number grade and comes up with an average number from that. I don't trust or distrust either one. Very few people seem to understand how either one actually functions. Neither is supposed to be an end all be all, just give you an idea of what a variety of critics say as a some sort of consensus. The best thing either site does is collect all the reviews in one place so you can easily link to them and, one hopes, actually read them. Anyway, I found the movie to be absurdly stupid, but maybe that's what it was going for. If so, I think it bungled the tone, and it held it back from being as fun as it should be because it was too dumb.

I thought Aquaman was incredibly stupid too, and also kinda fun, but that one seemed to be a little more self aware. This one tried to inject a little too much drama. I thought the characterization was legitimately terrible and kind of in poor taste for something so dumb and trashy. And I didn't care for his camera work all that much, but then again I never really did. He seemed to be up to his same old tricks in the beginning, and then ramped it up beyond the pale later on, but it wasn't particularly inspired to me. I guess this could be in the Raimi camp, like when he made Drag Me To Hell or something, but it felt like he didn't know it should have been a straight up 'splat-stick' comedy. And I still don't get the 80s and 70s tough chicks that attack her in jail. It's so fucking weird... even if I always like to see Zoe Bell.

I lost interest watching the trailer and didn't finish it, so I doubt I would finish the movie. Wan peaked with or before Annabelle.

First two thirds feel like Wan is trying to appeal to more general audiences, engaging with them in hopes to not lose them in the final third. I wish the entirety was unapologetically B-movie but being from Seattle I found the lead chicks to be so entertainingly Seattlite I ended up enjoying it anyway, subtle jabs like the prison scene “whatcha do to get in here, forget to separate the recycling” made me chuckle. It’s a solid 6/10 movie for me, and it’s funny because I do not like Wan outside this and Aquaman, I find his standard horror fare to be a complete bore. This felt closer to what I want from a fun horror, not the stale jump scare fest and certainly not the A24 “prestige” horror which has lost any interest I had in that sub genre.

I didn't care for it, but it wasn't as dull as the trailer would have you believe. All his usual setups take place earlier and the it goes fully off the rails in the back half. And he didn't direct Annabelle. I don't care for him or the movies spun off from his movies, but they throw his name on a lot of stuff that he's only producing.

That first scene is pretty crazy, but then feels out of place through most of the rest of the first half or so. But that jail scene still confounds me. That line is kinda funny, but the out of date outfits that those ladies are wearing are so fucking odd. Is there a joke I'm not in on there? They looked like they parachuted in from other movies. Also, what was up with the music? That score is clearly trying to be that song 'Where is my mind' but like a weird horror version of it. That sort of made sense later, but then what a weird choice to not play the song over the credits or anywhere else in the movie. I'm sure they paid for the rights to use it as the score, so get stop there?

I think it is low-key funny, incredibly creepy, absurd nonsense and I enjoyed every minute of it. 7/10

Well... It's a James Wan movie, so a lot of people are going to say it's great and I won't really understand why. Ha ha, I thought I was the only one! I should amend that to say that I really liked Saw, Death Sentence, Furious 7 and a few others, but his Conjuring/Insidious stuff leaves me absolutely cold, and I don't quite know why. They have all the elements of what I like in horror, and some fine actors, but they fall absolutely flat. I would have to really strain to develop any interest in seeing this movie, even as a paid HBO Max subscriber.
