I've finally been shamed by the thread discussions on above I can't participate in, the sum total of my Japanese viewing running to not much more than RASHOMON, KING KONG VS GODZILLA and ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLE
So last week I watched my first Naruse SUDDEN RAIN and thoroughly enjoyed the tale of a dull Sunday at home magnifying a married couples discontent... and what a lovely uplifting final scene. This week I took in REPAST - maybe less absorbing - but stilll fine - and next up Is Ozu's THE MUNIKATA SISTERS. Then maybe FLOATING WEEDS if I can get it online free!
There are quite a few free on this site
I'm aiming to watch a pre 1970 Japanese film a week for the forseeable future so recommendations sought!
There are some more Kurosawa I want to try - some Noirish ones DRUNKEN something? and STRAY something? Where should I startAside from Ozu and Naruse, Mizoguchi is another name I'd like to put some celluloid under my belt.
I know I can get lots of lists online but some of you very kowledgable
Interested in silent era (Some Sessue Hayakawa recs please!)
And yes some more Setsuko Hara recs - from all stages of her career. The name is usually referred to in hushed tones of awe.. and I can totally see why!
Setsuko Hara in TOKYO STORY
Thanks in advance!
