The stereotype of the cinephile is a fat man glued to a couch or theatre seat with a bucket of popcorn? True or not?

I am in fine fettle, thank you. Even though I am in what some may consider an advanced age, I only take three prescriptions (for BP and cholesterol, just like every other American over 50). I exercise everyday and have no chronic illnesses. I am....magnificent! Everybody wants to be me. Did I mention I was good looking, too?

I think you are mistaking the stereotype for a pedophile with the stereotype for a cinephile luna.

I'm older than dirt, take one prescription for cholesterol and suffer no shortness of breath walking up a steep hill. Haven't had the flu in over twenty years and haven't been operated on since I broke an arm when I was nine years old.

The stereotype of the cinephile is a fat man glued to a couch or theatre seat with a bucket of popcorn? True or not? Sounds more like a "couch potato." I never really gave it any thought, but the word can carry a sort of pretentious connotation, so I'd guess the stereotypical image to be that of someone like the Columbia professor Woody Allen tangles with at an art-house screening of The Sorrow and the Pity in Annie Hall: a self-styled authoritative intellectual. Or, come to that, someone like Woody Allen himself, equally emphatic about his tastes and wedded to his opinions, but not quite as smug about it.

The couch potato cinephile stereotype is why I asked this question. I really don't believe in the stereotype in this case and asking was the only way too find out. Today, almost everyone has a sedentary life and I can't see how watching movies makes one bit of difference. I actually lost weight watching movies as they occupied my time and prevented boredom. Boredom is the number one reason I eat when I don't need to.
I have only started watching movies a lot in the past year so this is all new to me. At 61 I run every day, lift weights, take no meds, have no conditions and am only 10 pounds overweight. I have always been something of a health nut and find watching movies a very healthy hobby as opposed to doing drugs, smoking, motorcycle driving or some other dangerous activity.

If this is true, one can both be a cinephile, and give to charity at the same time.

I never exercise. I have a theory that everyone is born with their own specific number of heartbeats as credit. Exercising just uses them up faster. I had thought of emigrating to the US and founding a church based on this and other equally sensible beliefs of mine. Seems a surefire way to get rich with plenty of action on the side. But the US Govt was still holding a petty grudge about certain events in the vicinity of the US embassy in London way back in the late fifties and would not let me in.

I exercise by going to the store but I do 20 situps and pushups every morning. I have been a strict vegetarian (what we called it before the vegan label was around)for 30 years and that probably had value in my health situation since I do not go out much although I like having pop when I watch some movies because it reminds me of when we went to drive-ins.

I ride an exercise bike while I watch movies at home. A 90-minute movie burns about 600 calories.

I am admittedly lazy, but still manage to get some exercise in here and there. Actually just lost 20 lbs. in the past month due to contracting Lyme's disease (pesky ticks!) but I'm fine now. I cannot recommend avoiding ticks enough, it was pretty bad. I sometimes require movie theater style junk food for viewing certain movies. Hey, you have to live a little.

I'm sorry to hear you've been battling illness. Avril Lavigne was struggling badly to recover from the effects of lyme disease for five years.

Thanks Petrolino. Not showing any further symptoms, I hope it's in the past for me.
