The Braves' Red Barrett threw 58 pitches in a 9 inning complete game 2 hit shutout of the Reds. Struck out nobody, walked nobody, and no one reached on an error. 1 hour 15 minute game. Damn, how about taking a few pitches, guys?

Did Maddux have the greatest stuff in history, hell no. He had five good pitches, no real knockout pitch. So how did he win 355 games? He. Worked. FAST. For the life of me, I'll never figure out why pitchers (Red Sox pitchers are the worst offenders) take half an hour between every pitch. Granted, if I worked fast I couldn't win a game or get a single out. The pitcher had a distinct advantage, he knows what's coming, the batter doesn't. Why let the hitter get an idea? Working fast keeps your fielders more alert, allowing them to get a better jump on a batted ball. I've also heard people say that it widens the strike zone. An umpire, dressed in black or dark blue, with padding, on a 90+ degree day will be more generous to a pitchers who not taking four laps around the mound after every toss. Makes sense, yet we still get the "dawdlers". Was it the only reason Maddux did something no pitcher will do again (300 wins is out of reach now, let alone 355), nope. But it sure helped.

Eric Gregg behind home plate for this game too. His zone was from batters box to batters box. 😅

According to baseball reference, Maddux threw 77 pitches, with only 14 balls.

That could be 3 innings worth of pitching for most every other pitchers.

I feel like I remember him throwing an 88 pitch complete game shutout around this time, in under 2 hours (about 1:56). But human memory isn't the best.
