Did they choose wisely?
Was thinking about this the other day when it occurred to me that my favourite AFL team has only had the #1 pick once.
Houston Rockets- top of the class. 2 #1 picks, 2 HOFers. Akeem Olajuwon and Yao Ming.
Dallas Cowboys- 3 #1 picks, all three were pro bowlers who won at least one Superbowl with the Cowboys and one HOFer. Ed Jones, Russell Maryland and Troy Aikman.
Blackhawks- again we've only had one and he's a good one: Patrick Kane. 9x All-Star. 3 Stanley Cups. Likely HOFer.
And then finally my favourite team Collingwood. Had the #1 pick in 1999 and selected...Josh Fraser. Josh was the epitome of a good footballer. Always Above average, never great. Clocked up 11 seasons and 200 games for the club. Lost his spot in the 2010 premiership season. Overall, I think a decade of quality service in a fairly successful era isn't a bad return.
I took the liberty of looking at Richmond's #1 picks. Richard Lounger (1987) still the heaviest man ever to play in the VFL/AFL. Chalked up 4 games for Richmond. Scored 5 goals, 4 of which came on debut. Anthony Banik- sad one. Developed a strange medical condition that was later found to be the quite treatable Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Retired after 49 games and 5 seasons. And Brett Deledio- sure fire HOFer but was more the toilet paper trying to clean a mouldy festering asshole most of his time at Richmond. Gave them his best years and sadly, his body broke down at GWS in what should have been some late career glory for him, ironically occurring right when Richmond became a contender.

Hoping for the best for Rockets. They have got #2. WE are probably going to select between Jalen Green (most likely) or Evan Mobley (less likely).
Evan Mobley is a Center. We had the luck with 2 of our #1 C.

The Falcons have picked #1 overall 4 times - 2 of them were very good players in Michael Vick and Tommy Nobis, Steve Bartkowski was okay, and Aundray Bruce was a bust. I was looking at Falcons first round picks for this thread and it’s interesting to look back on how the Falcons have done with first round draft picks over the last decade - overall they’ve done very well with offensive picks and poorly with defensive picks, it’s still too early to tell about AJ Terrell but hopefully he will break the trend of Falcons first round defensive picks being a bust.

Historically, I don't think so. Bobby Garrett struggled to read the game and froze in the huddle. Courtney Brown anyone?
But more recently, Myles Garrett and Baker Mayfield have been looking to buck the trend. Bringing in my man Jadeveon Clowney to play with them, well that's a recipe for success if Clowney can recapture the form that made him a Pro-Bowler.

Wendel Clark - yep
Drew Bledsoe - yep
Andrea Bargnani - beyond hindsight, he was I recall pretty much a consensus top pick in a weak draft
Auston Matthews - yep
This is a bit like the Oscars. Don't tell me 15 years later if a team chose the better all-star of 2 all-stars, when in the moment those projections are clinically impossible.

For instance in 1984 some have argued my Rockets made the wrong call taking Akeem and not Michael Jordan. All you can do fairly is look at what Akeem achieved. HOFer, 2 titles, MVP. Can't really call it a bad call.

Steelers won a coin toss with the Bears to get Bradshaw. It took a while for him to be good. I think of him as being Seinfeld - - in the 21st century, both would have been axed before they could have established themselves. A little more patience back then allowed them to find their footing and eventual excellence.

Chargers only had one : Eli Manning.
They traded him, and essentially got Phillip Rivers, Shawne Merrimack and Nate Kaeding.
Not bad.
Sabres : Perreault in 1970. Turgeon in 1987. Rasmus Dahlin in 2018. Owen Power in 2021.
Perreault is arguably the Sabres best player of all time, and a HoF inductee. Turgeon isn’t exactly a household name, and by the look of it played his best hockey elsewhere. Dahlin hasn’t done a great deal - but he is still only 21 years old and he’s a solid defenceman. Owen Power, another defenceman, has a big job ahead of him.

Celtics have an interesting history with the #1 pick. In 1950, they chose big man Chuck Share instead of local legend Bob Cousy (!). It all worked out though, because the Celtics eventually traded his draft rights for Bill Sharman (and as a side note, Cousy would end up coming to Boston in the dispersal draft after his team folded).
In 2017, the C's had the #1 pick but ended up trading down and getting their man in Jayson Tatum at #3 anyway. So both times they had the #1 pick, they ended up with a Hall of Fame player they didn't use that #1 pick on.
