Beat writers always link their team to big names, as I've tried to explain to others here.
"Yankees pursue Trevor Story and Jose Ramirez" "Yankees pursue late inning, left handed relief help"
Which sells more papers? That being said, the bullpen is their woes and they could shop for some cheap arms. Thing is, their entire bullpen sucks. Chapman has 4.15 ERA and a 1.413 WHIP. Those are horrific numbers for a closer. Zach Britton and Justin Wilson are worse. Chad Green and Loaisiga have been better but still blow leads (Loaisiga will be crucified after today's clusterfck). Can't build a new bullpen.
I think there will be a housecleaning at the end of the season. 12 years w/o a WS appearance, 2-10 record against the Red Sox, someone will have to pay. Cashman will get kicked upstairs to a ceremonial and Boone will be filling out job applications.
Well, at least some of us know what we're talking about Yeah, their bullpen is atrocious. What's funny is that for Chapman, he was the most dominant reliever in baseball for the first two months. Those vomit-inducing numbers are all just from recent weeks. Yeah, my brother is a Yankee fan and he rants about "Chappie" every day.
As far as some team eating half of Stanton's contract, I agree. Just looked at the team's payroll situation after 2021. Up for arbitration, Gio Urshela, Gleyber Torres, Gary Sanchez and, oh year, Aaron Judge. If he goes to arbitration Judge could get $25-30 million. The others won't do that well but they will get a bump from the 4-5 million they get now.

That would make the Brew Crew a very formidable team. Their top three starters, Woodruff, Burnes and Peralta, have been cruising. Put Mighty Max in there and that's a deadly playoff rotation. And Scherzer brings gobs of playoff experience.
The Cardinals get all the attention for their consistently strong rosters and smart trades/acquisitions/dispositions, but the Brewers are very adept at making solid moves that really bolster their team. Even earlier this year, a move that received precious little fanfare, has worked wonders. Back in May, they traded for Willy Adames who had really struggled in 40 games with Tampa, but since then, he has put up an OPS of .926, hit 11 homers and driven in 39 runs in 55 games for the Brew Crew. What a smart move and they gave up two fringe relievers. I could see them being in on Scherzer. I could also see them being in on Buxton and maybe even Donaldson; with Buxton's injury concerns, there's no way he'll command the premium he otherwise would if he were healthy. If someone like the Brewers who didn't want to part with their top prospects were interested, they could take Buxton and also Donaldson's contract (which the Twins want out of) and maybe throw in some lower level guys, flier type prospects. Adames always had decent pop for a shortstop but not this much. Rays traded him just to make room for uber prospect Wander Franco. And Adames was having a ghastly year in Tampa but he knew his head was on the block. Once that weight was off his shoulders...
