Jay Robinson was an American actor born in New York City who made a big splash in Hollywood in the Bible epics, The Robe and Demetrius and the Gladiator as the insane Emperor Caligula in both. But after appearing on Broadway with Katherine Hepburn in As You Like It and as the heavy along side Bette Davis in The Virgin Queen, he got caught up in drug abuse after his film career slowed; was arrested for methadone possession; and spent years outside of the entertainment industry working as cook and property manger, marrying and raising a son. He called himself a “David Bowie-like” twenty-something kid at the time, dating Ann Bancroft, and got thrown into Hollywood hosting parties for guests like Montgomery Cliff and Marilyn Monroe. He credits his good friend, Betty Davis, helping him get out of jail and later requesting him for a part in her movie comedy heist flick, Bunny O’Hare. In time, he returned the stage, movies, and TV, landing generally campy character parts in films like Everything You Wanted to Know about Sex* (*but Were Afraid to Ask) and Shampoo. He returned to his emperor mode in Bewitched. Star Trek Dr Shrinker in The Krofft Supershow in 1976. Bewitched Before retiring, he hosted the TV documentary anthology Beyond Bizarre. He died in 2013 at age 83.

His performance as Caligula in "The Robe" is featured prominently at the end of the first episode of "The Queen's Gambit" as the children at the orphanage watch the movie as Beth tries to steal the pills she depends on. We hear Richard Burton and Jean Simmons sentenced to death.

What a sad story.
Bette Davis was such a mixed bag. I have read that she snubbed Orry KELLY despite years of working together.
Glad to hear she reached out to help Jay.
His performance as Caligula was so memorable.

He's in the final episode of BANACEK (though the surprise twist I guessed after 5 minutes because he is so recognizable, you can't miss him in disguise).
Dr. Shrinker! Dr. Shrinker!
I liked his role on a Kolchak episode as an expert on the French Revolution.
He gave the least exaggerated performance in Coppola's Dracula.

His performance as Caligula was so memorable. When the TV show This is Your Life did a segment on Bette Davis, Robinson came on and read the letter she had written to the parole board in hopes of getting him released from early prison. It must have worked. Later Robert Wagner claims Davis, while she didn’t say anything on the air, after the show, told Wagner she didn’t even know Jay Robinson. However, she wrote the forward to Robinson’s memoir, so…. I don’t know if Wagner was lying or Davis lied to him. Weird story. Unlike RDJ, who also had a drug problem and was incarcerated, once out of prison, most of Robinson’s Hollywood friends turned their back on him. It was Davis though who helped him return to acting.
