Jay Robinson was an American actor born in New York City who made a big splash in Hollywood in the Bible epics, The Robe and Demetrius and the Gladiator as the insane Emperor Caligula in both.
But after appearing on Broadway with Katherine Hepburn in As You Like It and as the heavy along side Bette Davis in The Virgin Queen, he got caught up in drug abuse after his film career slowed; was arrested for methadone possession; and spent years outside of the entertainment industry working as cook and property manger, marrying and raising a son.
He called himself a “David Bowie-like” twenty-something kid at the time, dating Ann Bancroft, and got thrown into Hollywood hosting parties for guests like Montgomery Cliff and Marilyn Monroe.
He credits his good friend, Betty Davis, helping him get out of jail and later requesting him for a part in her movie comedy heist flick, Bunny O’Hare.
In time, he returned the stage, movies, and TV, landing generally campy character parts in films like Everything You Wanted to Know about Sex* (*but Were Afraid to Ask) and Shampoo. He returned to his emperor mode in Bewitched.

Before retiring, he hosted the TV documentary anthology Beyond Bizarre. He died in 2013 at age 83.
