After seeing the nonsense Gold Medal skateboarding yesterday I thought I'd have a look at the full sports list and see what are the best Olympic Sports and what I'd get rid of. Here's the full list:- olympics.com/en/sports/summer-olympicsMy top Five:- Athletics Swimming Gymnastics Weightlifting Hockey Bottom Five / remove please:- Football 3x3 Basketball (😩 ?!!) Tennis Golf Equestrian Five alternatives:- Squash (shockingly removed when Tennis is in!) Darts Ultimate Frisbee Trail (but not Ultra) technical running Pétanque What would you take out / add?

Out - Equestrian (especially dressage, if it's included) Football
but then I lost the will to live. It's a good idea for a thread but the Olympics is really not a gig for me. I tried. Darts and pétanque would be good. Some of those categories are funny, BMX this, Artistic that...

The clearing fences in the fastest time isn't so bad but then - in the "What happened to Chewbacca's medal?" vein - it's really about the horses performance anyway, so yes get it out... I actually landed up keeping skateboarding (!) as I'd rather see football, tennis, etc - sports were it isn't their pinnacle - out.

... Billiards (of various disciplines)... Was thinking of snooker actually but thought couldn't have that and darts. There seems to be an element of set it on a beach to make it a "summer" sport, so maybe we could have Beach Snooker and make the players replace waistcoats for vests and Bermuda shorts...

As an Australian, I sort of view sports the other way. All sports are summer sports, unless it involves ice or snow and then it’s a winter sport.

Football out, the most prominent sport in the world, ok. Hockey above Volleyball? Did you snatch a bad blood bag?

Does 'athletics' refer to 'track and field?' If so; all of the events therein?
I'm really not as much in favor in adding non-athletic events like darts or billiards or chess. I kinda like the idea of something resembling a circuit training or strongman or cross fit, but of course you couldn't call it those latter two names because they're brand names. But you could come up with something.
I did sorta enjoy watching dressage, but it is the dumbest thing ever... but watching those sorts of silly things that I'd never bother with otherwise is one of my favorite things about the Olympics.
And I didn't watch it, but I appreciate the inclusion of surfing and skateboarding. Why not? They're far more athletic than other events that we all accept, and everyone seemed to love snowboarding in the winter olympics, so what's the difference? I'm not sure how they're doing it in the summer games, but the half pipe was the best event in the winter snowboarding. If they had racing event, the half pipe trick event, and a course for tricks in the summer games I really don't see how anyone could be opposed to that.
One thing I think could be a cool addition would be something like Ninja Warrior, like an elaborate obstacle course of multiple phases. Those guys are tremendous athletes that don't really necessarily have any specific event that suits them... I also liked someone's suggestion of a parkour kinda thing.
I liked watching the 3 on 3 basketball, it's basically like a street ball pick up game (I'd enjoy watching something like 'taps/21' too), but I get the argument against it.
Anyway, I'd mostly get rid of stuff like skeet shooting and stuff like that... and I guess all the horse shit (why is horse dancing involved, but horse racing isn't? Doesn't make much sense).
Also,I think there should be more weightlifting. There are only 3 lifts as far as a I can tell. No bench, no squat, etc. I think there should be more lifts and some kind of cumulative weightlifting event for all around, full body strength.
I like a lot of those lumber jack games things too like axe throwing and the one where you have to chop a slot into a tree to add a platform again and again til you reach the top, but I doubt many people would go for that kinda thing.
And breakdancing is stupid. If you wanna include dance, which could be fine, what about like ballet or something with some history?
Anyway, lose breakdancing, lose skeet shooting and target shooting, lose dressage, lose 3 on 3 basketball even though I enjoy it, and lose one other event where people just stand in one spot without running, jumping, lifting, or throwing. I'm sure there's something else there that's hardly athletic.
Add highland games type thing (if throwing a shot put or a javelin counts then throwing a tree trunk is at least as valid), add an obstacle course, add more lifting, squash AND racquetball, and ... hmm...
Just looked up some stuff and saw that traditional Polo is NOT and Olympic sport. Really? So water polo and horse dancing are Olympic sports, but not horseback polo?
I wouldn't give a shit about it, but that doesn't make sense. That'll be my 5th.

Football out, the most prominent sport in the world, ok. Hockey above Volleyball? Did you snatch a bad blood bag? I said hockey but otherwise I would have put rowing. I think hockey's a sport that takes it's spotlight in the Olympics (certainly the only time I ever saw it when I was a kid). And of course maybe tainted by watching GB win the gold in Seoul, four years on from doing well in LA. www.greatbritainhockey.co.uk/olympics/olympic-history/seoul-1988Also very much part of the reason why I don't like football being in it. Any of the big sports - that don't need the Olympics - taking the shine off those that do is a big negative for me. Having said that I like that 5-a-sides or fusbal idea... Maybe beach 5-a-sides?

I think athletics is anything which takes place / finishes in the stadium. So marathon would be included, although I don't know why that site listed "Marathon Swimming" separately... I like chess but don't really see it at the Olympics. Darts on the other hand I think is just an issue of perception. Archery and shooting are in yet darts - arguably more athletic in comparison given that it's your body rather than any device which projects the object towards the target - isn't.

I could see darts when compared to shooting, but not archery. There's considerably more strength and stamina involved in pulling and aiming a bow and arrow than throwing a dart.

Honestly whatever they throw on, I'll watch (at least as background noise). Any argument I could make for or against a certain sport would also be true of plenty of sports that are already events. I'd sure as hell rather watch skateboarding than darts. At the end of the day it's the best in the world at their craft competing for their country, the stakes alone make it fun.

Oh yeah, definitely more strength required for Archery. But the point I was trying to make was that Shooting requires a gun / rifle, archery requires a bow, whereas darts is simply you and your bodies mechanics. It's more pure a sport in that sense even if the perception is that it has no place in the Olympics.

Most of our sports involve equipment of some kind. Just because there's no intermediary between you and the dart while there is a bow between you and the arrow doesn't make darts more purely a sport than archery to me at all. I think archery has more athleticism and therefore I'd argue it belongs in the olympics more so.

You are correct. Hockey is a premier tournament in Olympics to those who love hockey. A hockey gold medal is pretty much close to a hockey world cup.

Football is least likeable in the Olympics. At least to me. It's not an A grade competition. With age restrictions and all.
