Australia completely bottled it in the men. Should be Brazil, Spain and Japan winning medals there.
In the ladies - a bit of a lottery.

Australia completely bottled it in the men. Should be Brazil, Spain and Japan winning medals there. In the ladies - a bit of a lottery. Don't count Mexico out. They've had some success with their younger teams - it's when the players get older that they can't seem to win against opposition from outside their region. I just checked to see if I remembered it correctly - they beat Brazil in the Gold Medal match in London nine years ago.

Women:
Team GB - a determined effort against a below-par USA offers hope for Matildas but GB to win by the odd goal, I feel. Australia
Sweden - should make it 4 wins out of 4 versus a Japan side which has managed just 2 goals, but also conceded just 2. Tight, tigerish game. Japan
Netherlands - tie of the round, surely, and unless USA can up their collective game, this should be a win for the goal-rampant Dutch. USA
Canada - a close one with Canada needing to contain Marta and the multi-(p)layered Brazilian assault platoon and also to address conceding late on. Brazil - Brazil may be clear match favourites but Canada will make them work. Extra time a-calling. I think this will be a lot closer than the match odds suggest and I am sorry but I am unable to reach a decision.
To win the trophy USA 7/4 GB 15/4 Sweden 9/2 Netherlands 6/1 Brazil 13/2 Canada 14/1 Australia 16/1 Japan 20/1
Each-way (to reach the Final) ⅓ the odds a place.

I put football in my bottom five Olympic Sports in that thread but to be fair I was thinking of men's football.
I think the Olympics is actually a great platform for women's football.

Now GB Women v Australia Women kicks off, overlapping the Brazil/Canada game, which is at the halfway point, which is all a bit stupid. Sweden/Japan will overlap the GB/AUS game and the Netherlands/USA game will overlap the SWE/JAP game. Can't they get anything right?
It's goalless at CAN/BRA with one shot on target for each side but this game is up for grabs by anyone. Let's stick with this game and see what happens...

GOAL!
Well, put that in your pipe! Alanna Kennedy has headed the Australians ahead from the corner on '35. Poor defending against the assault from Team GB allows Kennedy's header to whistle home.

Canada and Brazil indeed go to extra time after a goalless but lively 90 minutes. Both sets of players have kept up their energy levels admirably. Brazil's Marta, wearing her customary bright red lippy, continues to run things from the middle, the den mother of all den mothers as pivotal as ever. But Canada, well-oiled and looking after business at the back, are in this all the way. The bookies currently favour Brazil to go through by a quarter of a point, 3/4 to Canada's even money. I'd say it was even closer than that at this stage.
Edit - 3 games going on now as Sweden kicks off against Japan. The trick is to concentrate on just one game, with perhaps a second game playing in the background. But no way can you follow three at once.

GOAL!
The ball is whipped in on '57 by GB's Hemp and it's powered in by the head of White. Keeper Micah is stranded as she watches the ball sail in with no chance of intercepting it. A very well placed header, you have to say, for GB 1 Australia 1.

GOAL!
GB's Ellen White pots her second, ten minutes after her first. The ball was pinging about in the Australian box, it fell to White who stabbed it goalward. Keeper Micah got hands to it but couldn't get a parry. It's 2-1 on '67.
Fair play to Matildas who came out for the second portion looking to increase their lead and not sit back, but unfortunately they find themselves behind with now 20 minutes to play.
And Japan has equalized against Sweden for 1-1.
Here, it could be a shootout situation as Canada and Brazil head into the second half of extra time.

Erika for Brazil. Scores. 3-2 Brazil. Two penalties each remaining.
Leon scores for Canada. 3-3.

GOAL!
Fowler for Australia! She unleashes a missile from 25 yards, it takes a deflection on its way to goal and flies into the top corner for 3-2 Australia in the first portion of extra time.
This comes shortly after a penalty miss for GB, Micah saving from Weir.
The ref blows up on the period and they will come back for 15 minutes more play.

They've done it. They've done it. The Matildas are through to the semis!

GOAL!
Miadema for Netherlands fires home on '55 for 2-2 against USA. The keeper got hands on it but could do nothing.
Alex Morgan is promptly brought on, along with Christen Press and Rose Lavelle in a triple USA substitution.

Christen Press slots it home from just outside the 6 yard box but immediately the ref blows for offside. It goes to VAR. It's tight. The VAR officials are viewing it with the naked eye, it seems, no lines on their screens. It's taking a few minutes, this. In the meantime Rapinoe is subbed on for USA. The VAR review continues...no, no, it's determined that Press was marginally offside and the score stays at 2-2.

NETHERLANDS PENALTY MISSED.
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
Beerensteyn is bundled down by O'Hara in the area. Martens steps up. They're waiting for VAR to confirm the decision before Martens can take it. The wait is doing the girl's nerves no good at all. USA keeper Naeher eyeballs Martens, looking stern, stony - Jeez, Naeher's face could turn fresh milk sour.
Martens finally gets to take. She goes low. Naeher sees it coming a mile off and collects without ado.
It remains two each.
