Whittaker wrote about her departure in a statement: “In 2017 I opened my glorious gift box of size 13 shoes. I could not have guessed the brilliant adventures, worlds and wonders I was to see in them. My heart is so full of love for this show, for the team who make it, for the fans who watch it and for what it has brought to my life. And I cannot thank Chris enough for entrusting me with his incredible stories. We knew that we wanted to ride this wave side by side, and pass on the baton together. So here we are, weeks away from wrapping on the best job I have ever had. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to express what this role has given me. I will carry the Doctor and the lessons I’ve learnt forever. I know change can be scary and none of us know what’s out there. That’s why we keep looking. Travel Hopefully. The Universe will surprise you. Constantly.”

I know that some fans may not have liked her, and want to see her go... But, It seems like she just started in the role, and now she is already leaving?
Tom Baker held the longest tenure and played the Doctor for Seven consecutive seasons...
But, now, Just as we start getting used to them, they leave after only a few short seasons... Why?
And then there was Christopher Eccleston, who only played the role for one year...
The powers that be, need to make better casting choices and get actors who want to play The Doctor for much longer eras...

Jodie wasn’t the problem. I mean she kinda was, but the scripts were the problem and Chibnall as well. It’s like she didn’t try to make the scripts work.

I quit during Capaldi, fine actor but the sad old guy whose kids never call personality didn't work for me. I've only seen Whittaker on Broadchurch and she was like watching a cardboard stick puppet. My wife complained I wasn't giving her a chance, watched 3 episodes and quit, lol. I think the show should take a decade or more off.

It needs another rest.

I've heard all of that "it's the scripts" stuff online and from family and friends. I re-watched Jodie's first season recently and am now wondering if that is just code. While there were no stand-out classics from the season, no "Empty Child" or "Human Nature," (the closest was "Rosa") still all are were entertaining, surprising, and, yes, well-acted. Jodie was certainly a "different" Doctor but then so were they all.
After Tom Baker's 7 season run as The Doctor, I believe the three-seasons-and-out tradition began with Baker's replacement Peter Davison. So Jodie's 3 is perfectly honorable. Christopher Ecceleston only agreed to only one season at the start but even so he became persona-non-grata at the BBC after not going ahead for another. He had to come to the U.S. and take a roll as a villain in "G.I. Joe" to get work. (See him being excellent in the cable series "The Leftovers.")
Yes, the whole Timeless Child business was confusing, I admit it, but it has already been walked back to a certain extent with "Revolution of the Daleks" when she says “All that time in a cell wondering who I am. I’m The Doctor. I’m the one who stops the Daleks.”

Tom Baker was the most popular because he was the most strong in personality. Sort of a quirkier Basil Rathbone. Before him they went for a grandfatherly kind of image. The next Doctor Who will not be white. Guaranteed.

I agree the problem was not Jodie Whittaker, but Chibnall and the awful scrips and stories. But personally i think the downfall of Doctor Who started with Capaldi.

Capaldi's characterization of the Doctor was in the wrong place. NewWho: We had Eccleston, energetic, masculine, dark, a subtext of danger. Tennant was a more refined version with fun, moody, manic, dangerous, but war weary. Smith was the big rebirth, shedding some of the moodiness and war weariness, quirky, whimsical, fun, optimistic. Then Capaldi, moody, tired, sometimes cranky, like a lonely old man whose kids never call or visit. It didn't fit and IMO wasn't a good Doctor. OTOH, my wife is hardcore David Baker fan and really liked Capaldi but she doesn't think very hard about TV or movies.

Fair play to Jodie for her tenure, not many actors would have turned it down, but for my taste, I can't regard this period as Canon, Too many deviations from my favourite elements of the show.
Was not mad about Chibnall's showrunnership at all and stopped watching regularly quite early on....just seeing the odd episode on ketchup now and then .
I am quite happy about Russell T.Davies returning , as he seemed to have a genuine love and respect and borderline fanboyness about the good Doc in his input. I enjoyed his tenure immensely....and Even Moffat to a slightly lesser degree seemed fan, but Chibnall reminded me sort of like that director of that awful Fantastic Four movie where he briefly nodded to the history, and then went all my 'it's my toy now'.
I think fresh, reboot and stuff in certain genres, can be initially fun and Intriguing, and better some than none....but a lot of folk and fans revisit their comfort zones for a reason, and an assault of too much revisionism , wokeism and deviation is ultimately unsatisfying.
.....and it doesn't need wall to wall bloody bombastic bloody background music smothering every scene !!!

I think Michael Sheen or Lara Pulver could be good choices for the next Doctor.

I’m excited about this. The comments of the casting team, and esp. RTD, about how impressive Gatwa was (bright and bold and brilliant, Ncuti dazzled us, incredible dynamism, a striking and fearless young actor) reminds me a lot of the praise from the production over Matt Smith. I, too, was a little worried about Matt’s youth and inexperience so I checked him out in the historical TV movie mystery “Ruby In The Smoke” starring Billie Piper, ironically the first Doctor’s companion of the New Series. About 20-minutes in, Ruby visits the office of her solicitor. A door opens and out pops Matt. It was like someone had just turned on all the lights. Bright bold and brilliant could have described him as well. I can’t wait to see Ncuti in action.

FUN FACT: His first name, Ncuti, is pronounced SHOO-tee.
