This is an intensely creepy metaphysical horror movie filled with ideas. THIS MOVIE IS NUTS!!!
I will just set the movie up. It starts in 1995 with 4 adult friends walking in in the mountains of Bhutan (main religions are Buddhism and Hinduism) where one of the group falls into a cave where there is an ancient giant angelic appearing skeleton melded to the wall. This is a 20 minutes prologue sequence that sets up a story about a former detective (James Badge Dale) who is investigating the disappearance of a teenage girl in 2018 Missouri.
This movie definitely won't be for everybody, but it is fascinating, well-made and ambitious.

Never heard of this one before, but I think I'll look into it. Sounds interesting. Upon looking it up, I noticed it has a running time of 137 minutes!
By the way, is it a found-footage type horror movie?

That sub-genre has grown tiresome.

Hmm... I'm intrigued. The reviews have been interesting to follow. For the most part it seems that critics have said it was worthwhile but that audiences really hated it. As I looked into it a little bit I see that the studio shelved it for a while and didn't do screenings for critics because they didn't have much confidence after their test screenings.
Hard to say why that would be without having seen it yet, but the some of the reviews suggest it takes a turn in the 3rd act that could be polarizing, but that it could work and that it was a cut above the throwaway studio horror movie that some might assume.
Either way, I'm interested. It's on HBOmax, so I'll definitely be checking it out soon.

It's not your standard gory horror flick, this one keeps you invested with the story and the atmosphere, which is pretty creepy. It is long but doesn't feel long, I really liked this one.

I liked it for the most part, although the 3rd act was a little nuts. The movie reminded me a little of The Wicker Man (1973).

Totally agree, and the third act kinda tempers my opinion of the movie overall. But I agree it's worthwhile. The opening sequence is outstanding. I was legitimately unsettled by that whole segment. It's really well shot, impressively so for a first-time feature filmmaker and there are some terrific ideas here. Some work, some don't, but generally I found myself hooked on what was going on. The whole 'step towards the entity/step away from the entity' part was very effective, particularly when our protagonist encounters the cultist dance group. What an effective scene, starting from when he's watching the guy paint with his own blood.
