Rewatched. Amazing western.
Spoilers
First time in a while I sat all the way to the end credits. I didn’t remember that Spearman planned on buying the bar in town. That’s a nice touch. Implies they’ll all be able to stay together. For whatever reason I always thought that only Charlie intended to stay in town.

I always enjoyed it too. I appreciate that it's more of a classical old fashioned western. I actually never watched that end credits bit. That's cool.

Didn't do a lot for me. I think everyone flying around like cartoons in the big shootout took me out of it.

Didn't do a lot for me. I think everyone flying around like cartoons in the big shootout took me out of it. That’s fair. I kind of like that tho. It stands out to me. Also the glass always seems so thick. I like that too. Like chunks of ice flying anytime a window gets blown out. But to each their own.

Ok, I'm gonna have to finally watch this soon. I remember my dad seeing it way back when it came out and raving about it to me (which he rarely does).

It is a pretty fair western and I was glad to see a new modern production of the genre.
If I have one big beef against it, it is the modern movie curse of an omnipresent pervasive musical underscore to cue the audience on what to think and feel about what's on screen. When Robert Duval begins the story of his late wife he gets about four words in before the violins start up underneath. I wanted to shout, "Robert Duval can convince me of ANYTHING! He doesn't need this soapy, sappy music to convey feelings and emotions. He can do it all by himself with his acting!"
Other than that I liked it fine.

Especially as this type of character. The old gritty wise one of the group.

Good movie. Reminds me of Matewan and Culpepper Cattle Company in the way it is a basic drama in the wilds, culminating in a Hollywood style shoot out at the end, which I can't help but think of as a sell out, except it's a true event in Matewan, so it goes to show that events can lead to a small war among factions.
