I’m on my 4th Minette Walters mystery. Her protagonists are usually heavy smokers, which is fine, except that she mentions every time they a) light a cigarette b) inhale and exhale smoke and c) crush out a ciggie. It gets damn tiresome when a writer depends so heavily on the act of smoking to pad conversations.

Smoking was once ritualistic.

Interesting how smoking used to be everywhere in films too, but that's gone down.
Boozing it up is sure normalized though.

In The Death of Bunny Munro by Nick Cave (2009) the lead character is a smoker. Whenever he lights a cigarette, he torches it.
"Bunny stepped outside and torched a Lambert & Butler"
" 'It'll never work'," growled Bunny, torching a Lambert & Butler.
I liked that.
