A spoiled, piece of shit kid gets a lump of coal for Christmas. He hires an assassin, who himself collects gifts from Santa’s workshop, to off Christopher Cringle. That would be a movie right there but much of it is devoted to another story - With more kids being awful, less presents are being made. To help pay the bills, Cringle enters into a contract with the US military for his elves to build fighter jets. Going extra grizzled, Mad Mel Gibson is surprisingly earnest in the title role. When the final act has the snow turn red, it almost feels like something out of a Coen Bros. film.
2.5 out of 4

At first I thought you were making up a parody of Batman (maybe).
Then I googled and found this is real.
Looks like four years of Trumperica has rotted everyone's brains there.

I wanted to like it and I was ready to laugh and be entertained. But I didn’t find it that interesting once I got past the “Mel Gibson is Santa Claus” joke.

I think I liked it, but it was so hard to tell if the movie was supposed to be serious with just some comedy elements in it or a black comedy.

I think I liked it, but it was so hard to tell if the movie was supposed to be serious with just some comedy elements in it or a black comedy. The premise is obviously goofy, but I felt like the movie plays it completely straight and unironically which made it really interesting and refreshing. I actually really enjoyed it.

I think the reason it works is because it takes such a ridiculous premise and plays it straight, but I think I would classify the movie as a black comedy. The scene with the elf and the soldier talking about diet is played straight but there is that underlying absurdity to it and that is what makes it work. I don;t know about you but in the back of my mind I am laughing throughout the entire movie. I keep thinking "this movie is so ridiculous" and at the same time I am actually emotionally engaged at a serious level with what is happening.

The premise made me chuckle, but I found the movie lacking in both humour and thrills. Gibson was fine, but Walton Goggins was wasted in a thankless role. Ultimately I thought the whole thing was just a complete waste of time.

Saw it in I think 2021. Great premise but was pretty forgettable to me. 4/10
