The ongoing String Challenge
Thought I'd start a thread for an ongoing trivia game that all can dip into whenever they want.
What is the "string"? Basically a linked list that can be as long as you can make it. For example if you decide to do a string of actors playing real people it may look like this
Margaret Lockwood NELL GWYN Anna Neagle QUEEN VICTORIA Judi Dench QUEEN ELIZABETH I Cate Blachett etc etc
You can create a string on a subject of your own making...you can try and beat an existing string...you can add to an existing string. Just remember to put the TITLE/SUBJECT of the string at the top of your post.
Examples of subjects...
Playing same character Played Husband/Wife Killed by previous actor Worked with same director
Subject of String can be as vague or precise as you like.
I'm not checking these..it's just a bit of fun...I hope. _______________________________________________________
To add a little element of competition I will try and keep a tally of lists here and how many links achieved. There if anyone wants to beat that number
Portrayals of Real People (actress) - 5 links - Isapop Worked with the same director more than twice - 6 links - Sostie Married to Characters - 4 links - kijii

I don't think so. That would be merely a list, and I think something more here is required.

I don't think so. That would be merely a list, and I think something more here is required. If you say so, Isapop. But I think I'll wait for QM Sostie to set me straight. Or you could post one to show me how.

Or you could post one to show me how. Well, that's the thing. I'm not sure I'm sure, but it sounds like something more involved than a list. Look at his example: Margaret Lockwood played NELL GWYN, who was played by Anna Neagle, who played QUEEN VICTORIA, who was played by Judi Dench, who played QUEEN ELIZABETH I, who was played by Cate Blachett etc etc So, adding to that string, you could go: Cate Blachett, who played Maid Marian (assuming she was real), who was played by Olivia de Havilland, who played Charlotte Bronte, who was played by Marie-France Pisier

Oh -- is THAT what he meant? At least with that example I think that's what he meant. How that can be adapted for other topics into a "string" worth creating, I'm not sure. He mentioned "Husband/Wife". Easy to create an endless string. Almost every star has played a spouse in some movie. So, it's no challenge at all to keep a string going, but because there's no challenge it's not interesting either. The thought of "Homicidal Spouses" occurred to me. There's a lot of movies about someone who wants to kill their spouse. But could you create a string? I don't think so. Let's see, Lancaster wants to kill Stanwyck (Sorry, Wrong Number), Stanwyck wants to kill Tom Powers (Double Indemnity), and....dead end. I don't think I could string three movies with that premise. So then "Married, With Children"? The spouses you string must all have at least one child. That narrows it down, and makes it more challenging. Maybe somebody'll think of an intriguing premise for a string.

As in: James Stewart Alfred Hitchcock Cary Grant Howard Hawks John Wayne John Ford ...and then Ford worked with...? Want to keep that going?

John Ford Henry Fonda Sidney Lumet James Mason Did Fonda work with Lumet more than twice? I hope so. Otherwise, you're in BIG trouble, missy!

Leon Ames FROM THE TERRACE (married to) rMyrna Loy MR BLANDINGS BUILDS A DREAM HOUSE (married to) Cary Grant TOPPER (married to) Constance Bennett..... Or a killer example... Lee Marvin (was killed in ...) THE COMENCHEROS (by) John Wayne (was killed in ...) THE COWBOYS (by) Bruce Dern (was killed in ...) WILD BILL (by) Jeff Bridges (was killed in ...) THE VANISHING (by) Keifer Sutherland (was killed in ...) LOST BOYS (by) Jason Patric... Of course you could do one more specific ie stabbings or shootings It's either a test of your selves, or a competition if you think you can beat a list already done by someone else.. or a group effort to achieve the biggest list possible on a specific subject.

John Ford Henry Fonda Sidney Lumet James Mason Did Fonda work with Lumet more than twice? I hope so. Otherwise, you're in BIG trouble, missy! Let me see if I understand.
I would than find someone who worked with Lumet more than twice (how about at least twice. More than twice is hard).
Al Pacino (Serpico & Dog Day Afternoon).
Now someone find another person who worked with Al Pacino at least twice.

Did Fonda work with Lumet more than twice? I hope so. Otherwise, you're in BIG trouble, missy! He did: 1957, 1958 and 1964. It’s YOU who is in trouble, now, Sir. Lashing myself right now with a wet noodle. How could I have been so foolish to doubt you? OK, so somebody needs a three time director for James Mason.

Nope. Bella already took care of Lumet (with Mason). We need a director (besides Lumet) who worked more than twice with Mason (if such a creature exists).

I'm beginning to think that my idea of "more than twice" will prove too restrictive to sustain a string. Maybe it should be "more than once" instead. It's easier to keep it going.

OK, since I started the string and we're all new at this, I shall indeed change it to "worked with director/actor more than once".
Now then, picking up where Bella left off with ..
James Mason Richard Fleischer.
