Leo Messi not staying at FC BarcelonaDespite club and player reaching an agreement and their clear intention to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations). As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled. FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life. www.fcbarcelona.com/en/football/first-team/news/2207655/leo-messi-not-staying-at-fc-barcelona

Honestly: hard to believe. The problem I see: he is a global football star and a great players, but he is also past his prime, and in Corona times many clubs have to keep their budgets tight - the reason why is is leaving at all. So, which club has the money, and which club is also willing to invest this money for him, and not for much younger prospects like Haaland => a Bundesliga players from Scandinavia if you shouldn't be aware who he is. I know, the Bundesliga is not a top league and one can't expect that people know every single player...and Dortmund. Anyway: a future player of the FCB if I had a say, but I guess he is way too expensive for these stingy bastards. So. It's either these attention whores from PSG, or an Italien club. The Premier League has become to competitive to fool around with big names who cost more than they are worth it. Messi is not only aging, but he is also high maintenance, he needs a roster which is built around him, I don't see him fitting in existing structures. he has never been the best team player imho.

So, why doesn't he sign for Barca for nothing until the club gets their finances sorted out, then they can arrange a contract that will include some sort of backdated pay agreement?

Good. Barca bitches about being in debt, wanting to modify contracts, and wanting to change La Liga's salary cap, so now here is their chance to live within their budget just like the VAST majority of teams that do.

Well, Barca didn't get the Super League money, so here you have it.
Maybe he'll got to Italy?

Messi was even willing to accept a pay cut of about 50%: NFL teams have a cap space hell, European football teams have debt "issues".

Aston Villa just got some money, maybe they can pay his salary. Are these billionaires aware that there are only four CL berths for the EPL, or is this Super League still in the making...secretly. Maybe they have an other angle and want to increase the berths for the big leagues.

No, if Neymar leaves to make room for Messi. I don't believe that they can swap Messi with Neymar. If Barca had any money left for such deals, they would have kept Messi.
