Temple is crass, noisy and bloated while Crusade is entertaining with good interplay between father and son but even that failed to give me the kick of awesome I felt when I first saw Raiders (which is almost perfect). How is it perfect when Indy doesn't do anything at the end to save the day, hes incapacitated and by sheer luck the Ark kills everyone - something he couldnt have predicted because he didn't believe in God. At least in Crusade he has to be courageous to make the leap of faith from his own consciousness and not rely on outside forces to help him.

Movies are always going to be subjective, it doesn't matter what anyone says. Same goes with music and TV shows.
At the end of the day, what matters is your opinion about the movie, whether you liked it not. Simple as that.
There are a ton of popular movies that I think are pure garbage. I couldn't care any less about what others have to say about that.
I like what I like. The customer is always right.

It’s perfect because it lives within its only logic which is based on pulp stories so Indy didn’t have to do anything apart from knowing when to keep his eyes closed and that led us into the greatest family friendly face melting scene ever. Before that we had some of the best action scenes ever that displayed a sure footed dance around situations that managed to be thrilling and daft at the same time. And then there’s the female leads and Karen Allen nailed her role while Temple had a tiresome screaming blonde. Alison Doody was fine in Last Crusade so no complaints there. Oh, and it had a Nazi saluting monkey

How can something be overrated when it’s literally the best movie of its genre…. Ever. You cannot overrate the best.

An interesting alternative perspective on a movie that is seemingly widely praised by all. I personally consider it to be an immensely enjoyable film. Ford was the right man for the role and I wouldn't want to have seen anyone else playing it. The opening act is rightly iconic and it's a spirited adventure movie of a sort that Spielberg excelled at making in his prime. BUT I don't consider it to be a completely flawless masterpiece either. There are some pacing issues mid-way through the movie and the ending, in which the crisis essentially resolves itself, is arguably somewhat anticlimactic - a point you've alluded to, OP.
For me, Temple of Doom is the better movie. I enjoy the Indian setting more. It looks and feels a lot more exotic than the barren desert. And the villains are more colourful and OTT. The faster-paced action sequences, darker tone and gory moments also add to its appeal to me. That said, the supporting characters aren't as strong and the opening is nothing to write home about. I don't know about Raiders being overrated but Temple of Doom is certainly underrated as far as I'm concerned.
Last Crusade is the movie I have the most conflicted feelings about. It's funnier than its predecessors, Sean Connery and Ford display great chemistry when sparing off against each other and it retains that kinetic energy so abundant in the previous instalment. Alas, I just wish they'd avoided making it so similar to Raiders. The re-use of the Nazis as the baddies and the Middle Eastern setting gave it the feel of a rehash, as though Spielberg was trying to re-live past glories. A superb adventure flick nonetheless.
I choose to ignore the fourth movie.

A health & safety trainer once pointed out that the customer isn't always right, rather the customer is always the customer. That was more to do with customers using employee equipment like ladders or machinery, & having some mythical defense.

At least in Crusade he has to be courageous to make the leap of faith from his own consciousness and not rely on outside forces to help him. It was said in 1984 that he gave a better performance in Temple of Doom. When Indiana Jones appeared he was intended as a stock hero character--that's why it wasn't called Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. He is one of the raiders. Also, they intended him to be a loser--that he wouldn't be like James Bond and always winning.
But my reaction to the movie was that the Ark is the main character--that's how it feels. The Ark with the rats for example. And when they shot it-they didn't have the end scene with him and Marion on the steps. They had to shoot that after Marcia Lucas questioned why she was left on the island! It went from them looking at the Ark to the DC office, and then the warehouse.
The problem with the sequels is that nothing is as powerful as the Ark. You can't get the same experience in that way so it is more character-based.
For several years Raiders was my favorite movie but it fell off my list because I think it is too limited in character. And that was before I had seen Secret of the Incas--Indiana Jones is based on the Charlton Heston character. His clothing is virtually identical--so much so that when Heston is looking away from the camera you could imagine it is Ford.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is overrated? Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is annoying and overrated? The hell is wrong with this board lately? It's called opinions little child. Ferris Bueller is a Matthew Broderick movie for fucks sakes how on Earth did you think that movie was going to be universally loved by everyone? The actor's puppy face constantly makes me feel embarrassed he's an actor. He would be okay as a teacher's pet not as an actor, but no one should feel under attack for disliking that movie.
