I don't understand tonight's episode.
Firstly, I've never been a fan of the character Floyd. I guess I'm too impatient. But in tonight's episode, there are these rogue vegetable sellers who are pedaling their veggies on the side of the road, and Barney comes by to tell them they're in violation and need to skedaddle because they don't have a permit.
Barney Fife being Barney Fife, the rogue sellers are pretty tough and not intimidated by Barney's tactics, especially given his skittish jumpiness, so it turns out Barney is the one who skedaddles.
Along comes Andy to the rescue, and straightens things out, and the vegetable sellers (cukes at a penny each!), to which the sellers point out that given Andy's sense of confidence and authoritarian presence, they'll scoot. They mention the scrawny fella who came by early, and why they didn't take him seriously, comparing him to a chicken. Andy, coming to Barney's rescue per usual, tells the peddlers they're lucky because he's also known as Barney the Beast, and proceeds to tell them how if Barney were serious, he'd give a little cough, tug at his collar, and tap at his gun holster, and that meant trouble. Big trouble!
Andy sends Barney back out (to build up his confidence). Of course, the peddlers see the nervous Fife coughing, tugging at his collar, and tapping his gun holster,...so the men fled out of fear. Later, they're filling their truck with gas in front of the station where Floyd and the gang are laughing about Barney as he drives by, and make it clear that Barney's a total joke and not to be taken seriously.
Floyd later visits Andy in the Sheriff's office to let him know of these two new strangers in town, and conveys the message about clarifying how these fellas got it into their head that Barney was a "beast" and "mean," and he (Floyd) made sure to set them straight, that Barney was nothing short of a goofball.
Okay, so here's my question after all of that exposition, and also why I would have no patience for people who are like Floyd in real life. Why would anyone in their right mind want total strangers to get the idea their law enforcement was a joke and laughable? Why wouldn't Andy ever take them aside and have a good talking to them about these sorts of things?
These are the things that just drive me nuts.
Okay, that's it. After watching this episode, I don't know what it was, but I felt,....triggered by the sheer stupidity of it all.
