Just like the Prequels before it, the sequel trilogy has become a punching bag in recent years. Also like the prequels all the hate directed towards it is becoming tiresome. So in an effort to counteract this, and look at the more positive aspects of the Sequel trilogy, I will select my five favorite moments from these three films.
5 ) Chewie, We're Home! - The Force Awakens
It may just be fan service, but it is the best kind of fan service. Seeing the two iconic characters returning to their equally iconic ship was truly a moment to remember.
4) Finn & Rey vs. Kylo Ren - The Force Awakens
While having two rookies going up against a "master" did strain suspension of disbelief, the actual fight choreography was strong, even unique for the series, as was the atmosphere and tone of the scene. It was also a good bit of character development for Finn as we see his willingness to fight a losing fight in order to protect a friend.
3) Luke Condemns the Jedi - The Last Jedi
Subverting expectations is one aspect of The Last Jedi that gets both praise and derision. Regardless of where you fall on that spectrum, the one place where it was most fitting is the scene where Luke condemns the Jedi Order. Looking back at the Prequels,(particularly Revenge of the Sith) you will find frequent cases of the Order doing some pretty shady things. Thus it was fitting for Luke to hold the Order's feet to the fire for their own demise. Not only was this thematically consistent with the previous films, but question the nobility of the Jedi was an intriguing challenge to the status quo.
2) The Death of Han Solo - The Force Awakens
While also fitting into the "death of a mentor" theme the was prevalent in the previous trilogies, this scene simply and examples of great filmmaking with the tone, lighting, and acting all fitting into the scene perfectly. It also showcased the character depth of Han Solo as he continues to show both love and sympathy of his son despite his actions.
1) The Memory of Han Solo - The Rise of Skywalker
By far the most emotionally satisfying moment of the entire Sequel trilogy. Sold by the terrific performances by both Harrison Ford and Adam Driver. The two did a fantastic job conveying the effect the death of his parents had on him. It was also interesting how it was left ambiguous if Han was a "force ghost" or it was Ben mentally revisiting his final moment with his father, only this time making the right decision. The Prequels had an emotional climax in the Anakin's defeat on Mustafar, the Original trilogy had one in his final moments with Luke, and the Sequel trilogy has one here, and I am happy to say it is worthy successor.
Thanks for reading. Whatever you feelings on the sequel trilogy are, I hope we can all acknowledge good aspects when we see them. If you have any picks of you own, please share them.
