I saw them at Safeway yesterday, but I don't like Safeway's overpriced produce. I'll check my nearby independent produce stores.

I remember having to hang the chili ristras when they came in (I worked at an import shop in New Mexico), the other women would suddenly "disappear" and I was stuck with the job. They were sticky and full of gnats. Hatch chilis are an important New Mexican crop, they are grown on farms in the Hatch Valley in New Mexico. I never acquired the taste and refused to hang a ristra outside our home (a popular thing in NM). A lot of tourists would buy them and I often wondered how they managed to get them home on the plane.

WKM, I had forgotten that you used to live in New Mexico.
I've had Chili Rellenos with Hatch chilies in restaurants, but I've never handled them in my own kitchen. I didn't know of their sticky/gnatty nature. I'll look at them in my nearby store, tomorrow.

These were the ristras that people hung for decorations, our store sold them fresh and unwaxed, I'm sure the chilis sold in grocery stores are not full of gnats.

Been using the hot ones. Bought mostly reddish ones. Some hot, most aren't. So far haven't done anything special with them.

A local grocery store here in Saraland, Al.(Rouses) is roasting hatch chilis for customers.
