This review excerpt is all you need to know:
"Depp remains wholeheartedly the focus of this fifth Pirates film, and saying the character's loopy novelty has faded is like complaining that there are maggots in the below-decks gruel: You knew what you were getting when you came aboard."
The only part of the original I enjoyed was Depp's performance, and that act was tired by the second film (which I've only seen parts of here and there). They've somehow made a handful of these now and so far as I can tell, the plot to the latest installment is identical to the first film. It even looks like the same villain. Adding to the redundancy of it all, Javier Bardem is reprising his typecast role as 'Creepy, Over The Top Villain With A Thick Accent.' I feel like they cast him intentionally as some kind of meta commentary on the tedious state of this franchise.

It's at 38% now. Almost all the reviews (positive and negative) say it's better than the fourth movie though.

Sometimes they seem to just hate a movie because they don't want to be the odd-man-out who liked a mindless summer blockbuster.

I personally liked every Pirates film except for the fourth one. I agree that these movies aren't meant to be taken seriously. They're just mindless summer blockbusters that you go to see at a theatre. I mean critics gave The Fate of the Furious positive reviews, and that's likely as mindless/goofy as this is.

All the critics are saying it's better than all of the sequels, but pirates 2 has 53% on rotten tomtoes and pirates 3 has 50%. So that means the critics are REALLY hursh on this movie. Jn reality, this movie probably deserves a score at around 65%

It's very odd how critics pick and choose which franchise to pile on or praise. The F&F are fun and entertaining but I give Pirates a lot more credit for offering something different and creative in each installment.

Why does the silliness of the F&F franchise get a pass but Kong: Skull Island doesn't? Why is Diesel good because the movie he is in is tailored to be mindless, but Hiddleston is awful because he isn't Oscar-worthy in Kong? Critics are very biased, then get angry when we (the average fan) call them out. I don't know, this movie might really suck. Critics just piss me off sometimes.

I am usually in accord (yes, its a fresh out of POTC quote) with RT, but cannot agree on this one. I had just seen the movie and I had a lot of fun. The visual is incredible. So is the CGI. Its so well made technically and visually, with so much entertaining action in it, that you gladly and easily overlook the deficiencies of the script. BUT- and I say this with total seriousness - as silly/stupid this script is, none of the characters in it act AS STUPID as the people in Alien:Covenant. I actually enjoyed POTC more than A:C. Its a perfect (mindless) blockbuster, the way it should be. And for me the second best of the franchise.

Both Roeper & Toronto Star give it 3/4 stars, seemingly for dialing back the run time & taking itself less seriously than the last.
I was mildly interested to see it theatrically, I guess I will. Word is Sparrow isn't much more than comedic relief in the film - which could be both a positive (Depp out of the way of the younger Turner drama) & negative (comic relief didn't save the previous film at all).
I do like the sound of notes mentioning it offers a sense of closure & finality (if it is the final installment). Frankly, the series ended for me with POTC 3. Part 4 was drab junk, I guess I just want to take the ride one more time for a softer bookending.

But (sadly?) it is not the last one if you go see it in the cinema, wait for the post-credit scene.

I have not read any reviews for Pirates of the Caribbean 5, but I did see the movie today, at the 1:25pm showing. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd rate it a 7. I would rate it an 8 because it started off good and the last half hour was riveting, excellent even. I especially liked the scene after the closing credits, but a lot could have been edited out of the middle of the movie, without losing anything. I never go to sleep during movies, but I almost nodded off during the middle. It was only my coca cola that kept me awake , until mercifully it picked up steam. Now, what was surprising to me was I was the only one in the theater. I saw it at a 15 theater Cineplex, so the same movie was playing in another theater or two -- so maybe more people saw it. I also saw the 3D version, the ticket was $11.50. The other theaters playing the movie in the Cineplex played the regular version where the tickets were cheaper. So again, maybe there were more people who saw it.

I think people will be less harsh towards these films if they were shorter.

I saw it tonight. Best one since the original by far. Reviews were WAY off. This was way better than 2-4 imo. Well worthy entry in the franchise.
