Both are pretty solid but I'd go remake for the style and cinematography.

Not seen the 2012 version so I guess I have to opt for the 1980 one by default. I found it unpleasant though.

Surprised, and kind of sad to see so little love for the original. That one is for me, surely among some of the most sleazy, atmospheric and creepy horror films of the 80s. Joe Spinnell at his absolute finest, and loved the unsettling and chilling score by Jay Chattaway and of course Tom Savini and his gruesome special effects.
The remake, I just never got into. I tried to ease up and head in, hoping for something good, but I do not remember much of it, and I guess that is a huge reason to why the original is such a huge favorite, as it was one of those, "damn, where have you been all my life" movies, and not just one that slips away within a few days later.
The original - 10/10 The remake - 5/10
