Million Dollar Mermaid aka The One Piece Bathing Suit in the UK (1952) Dir. Mervyn LeRoy An entertaining biographical musical film in which . Esther Williams plays Annette Kellerman the pioneering Australian swim star, and actress. Kellerman appeared in several movies, usually with aquatic themes, and as the star of A Daughter of the Gods (1916) she was the first major actress to appear nude in a Hollywood production. During production Esther Williams met with Annette Kellerman (pic) who was an advocate of health, fitness, and natural beauty throughout her life. Williams is quoted, "Miss Kellerman is a charming woman", and still has very good health and figure. She was a famous stage personality and made several sensational movies for her time. I believe her life will provide a fine subject for me..." Kellerman said... "I can still hold my own with Esther from the neck down, from the neck up, I think she is much too glamorous for the role. I think, really, she's too beautiful..." Esther Williams broke her neck upon impact while performing the film's signature high dive and thankfully she did not suffer permanent damage Million Dollar Mermaid became Esther Williams' nickname around Hollywood,

Esther " I can't honestly say I acted in an ANDY HARDY film but I certainly swam in one", To be fair to Esther she never wanted to be a movie star - MGM's offers were just too attractive. She enjoyed a 20 year star run and seemed like a level headed girl who made the most of the opportunities she ws offered.

She never made a big splash with me. She had one talent that the studios milked whenever they could come up with a good reason to dunk her in a nearby tank.
She was a kindred spirit with Sonja Henie, who was pulled from cold storage a couple times a year to star in mostly forgettable films until the audience tired of wondering how the writers were going to get her on the ice one more time.
Williams had a more varied career, but neither were going to push the like of Crawford or Davis off the screen.

I like her, always enjoyed seeing her swimming. She seemed to me act well enough for the parts she had. Dorothy Parker was probably just jealous, she was a spiteful cat.
