J 49... He read Poe and Scotish author John Buchan who published The 39 Steps when Hitch was a teen in 1915 but....
I am guessing the answer could be G.K Chesterton who wrote of Father Brown a Roman Catholic priest and amateur detective... the series of 53 short stories was published from 1910 when Hitchcock was just 11 years old...

J 46 John Buchan The Thirty-Nine Steps '"an-on-the-run" thriller adopted by Hitchcock and other film makers as a much-used plot device. ?

And then there was one (and no, it is NOT Agatha Christie)
hint: the #46 author being sought is referenced in one of the other questions (in a roundabout way)

Not Cornell, Jervis -- this author predates him by plenty.

A46 Third and final guess: Joseph Conrad, author of SECRET AGENT, among many other masterworks. Welcome back to the GG fold, Spider -- you sure have been missed around these parts. Three good guesses, but it is an earlier author who inspired a young Hitch.

Then here's a little extra question for you (or anybody).
What Hitchcock film was re-made for TV starring a former cast member of Saturday Night Live?
