High energy Cagney, whether he's dancing to beat the band in Yankee Doodle Dandy or shooting holes into the trunk of a car to give the guy inside a "little air" in White Heat.
Favorite Cagney movie: The Roaring Twenties.
Runner up youthful, "ah shucks" Stewart came back from the War and reinvented himself into an excellent, intense actor, equally at ease in western and contemporary settings, who thrived well into the James Bond era.
Favorite Stewart movie: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence.

Either or.
Favorite Cagney - either White Heat or Mister Roberts
Favorite Stewart - The Naked Spur, any of the Anthony Mann westerns

Jimmy Cagney was my childhood crush; when I was 11, I saw him in several of his more charming roles in Yankee Doodle Dandy, The Bride Came C.O.D., The Strawberry Blonde, Torrid Zone, and Mister Roberts (okay, he wasn't charming in that one, but he was very funny--I recorded his rants from that movie and listened to them over and over like a routine from a favorite comedian). Then I saw him in some serious roles, but didn't really get to the scary ones--The Public Enemy, White Heat--until I was an adult. I still haven't gotten over him, so he remains one of my favorites.
James Stewart--I loved him in Harvey, but otherwise, not a huge fan. He was effectively obnoxious in a couple of the Hitchcock films, but his miscasting in Vertigo spoiled the film for me. I did like his appearances on the Tonight Show, reciting some of his poetry.

I thought he should have won Best Supporting Actor over Jack Lemmon.

Both greats, but Stewart gets my pick. Favorite actor of all time actually. Cagney is up there though, definitely top 20.
I don’t think I’ve seen a Stewart film I disliked.
One for the Cagney fans that’s definitely missed by quite a few folks is the Gallant Hours. Cagney stars as Admiral Bull Halsey during the Guadalcanal Campaign of WW2. Heavy dialogue and little to no actual action onscreen. Cagney definitely triumphs in one of his last films.

Both are great. I think Cagney was in a few more classic films. Stewart's best ones are roughly 8/10 at most, while Cagney has the 10/10 SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL and 9/10 ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES and RUN FOR COVER is 8/10 and slightly better than Naked Spur, Man From Laramie, Firecreek, and Bend of the River.
Still, Stewart had more 8/10 movies I think. And he usually is more likable than Cagney. But SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL is in my top 10 films of all time..
So I'll go with Cagney.

I'm going with Cagney. To quote the Midnight Wolfman, "he's a tough f*cking little sh*t."
