The Poseidon Adventure
I don't consider Titanic a "disaster" film. That would be my favorite if I did.

Towering Inferno
I like the McQueen and Newman leads although the ensemble cast is great. Astaire in particular.

Titanic (1997). It's a romance at its core but it still has the wreck in the last hour or so, which is inevitable for this movie.

Nifty little collection of 70s disaster movie posters.
Disasters
We did love to see star-studded casts in danger back then, it was a lot of fun trying to guess who would survive. A couple of these are stretches as far as the genre goes, but it's all in fun, so who cares? A couple of samples:

If you accept The Poseidon Adventure in the disaster sub genre, then any movie involving the Titanic sinking should be included. It may not have been a world shaking catastrophe, but it certainly resonated with the 1100 people involved.
My favorite is A Night to Remember (1958)
Next in line:
The Poseidon Adventure just edges out The Towering Inferno, mostly for its claustrophobic ambiance and focus on a small, select group of people rather than a broad canvas of characters.
Never cared for Earthquake.
I haven't seen the disaster movies made from 1990's to the present in a theatre. They are enjoyable, but lose their intended impact even when seen on a large screen tv.

Pictured: not a disaster, apparently. I think people are referring to disaster films as a Genre, and as such, are fictional stories. Titanic sinking is an historical event, and would fall under a different category such as biographical films... Including the fictional story of Jack & Rose, doesn't change the fact, that Titanic sinking was still an historical event I guess some people view it differently... I still don't think " Back To The Future" is a comedy, but many fans disagree with me... and so did video stores. It was always in their comedy sections, and not their SciFi or Action Adventure sections.

I like how in the 70s the disaster films weren't just confined to natural disasters. They based them on man-made disasters as well:
Airport - On a plane The Cassandra Crossing - Virus on a train The Hindenburg - Airship Damnation Alley - World War 3 aftermath The Towering Inferno - Burning building Rollercoaster - Rollercoaster etc
For me it's Twister, The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno and Titanic.
