One of my favorite seasons by Scholes, I think was back in the 2002-03 season, where he was playing behind Van Nistelrooy, and I believe banging in about 18-20 goals (more or less), but not sure if Paul himself fancied that position, or if it was a result of Fergie trying really hard to make sure Veron would gel with the midfield, and one had to move on for a while. Sadly Veron never quite seemed to fit into the team, even though he produced some great moments here and there, while Scholes much higher on field, was at times on fire that season.
I guess he had to, as Forlan surely never quite seem to fit in either, even though he ended up becoming almost like a cult-figure by many fans.
And Ole would be pushed in the position of Beckham, after the latter came to blows with his boss, and Ole and Scholes often seem to work out a great chemistry between them, producing some absolute stunning goals, where one of my favorite where against Newcastle in a 6-2 victory, I think.
As a kid, I used to pick up some of the Manchester United and (Goals) football magazines, and there was a certain story about these two upcoming redheaded players at United (Scholes and Nicky Butt), and where much later on, they both seeemd to share a certain knack of handing out some nasty tackles, where Scholes was put down to just being a "clumsy" tackler, where as Butt, well, he did certainly have his temper on the field.
Anyway, in the old article, I think it was hinted that one of the reason behind Scholes so often "mistimed" tackles, were out of a result of bigger players trying to bully him out of position, and that was his way of "evening things out".
I sure do remember that his way of taking and giving, would end up with the likes of Dennis Wise and Patrick Vieira, often ending up on the floor.
Wise also seemed to never quite get out of the heads of either Butt nor Scholes, even when he was much later the player/manager for (was it Milwall?) during a FA Cup final in 2004, he would try his nasty tactics on Scholes, pinching him in the balls or something like that.
