So-so fan. I’ve read ’Salem’s Lot, The Shining, Four Past Midnight (novellas), Storm of the Century (teleplay), and a bunch of short stories. And I’ve seen several of the movie/TV adaptations: Carrie, ’Salem’s Lot, The Shining (both), It, Misery, Needful Things, Dolores Claiborne, Storm of the Century, Doctor Sleep, 1408, The Dark Tower. Of his books I’ve read, The Shining—which has little to do with the even better Kubrick film adaptation—is probably the best. ’Salem’s Lot, while severely flawed, could make for a great film; why they haven’t yet adapted it for a movie, rather than a TV miniseries, is beyond me.

Read most and still think he needs a bloody good editor. Mot of his works could be improved by taking out 100 pages.

Pretty much a lifelong fan. I tried the first one (Desperation) when i was 14 or so, and it didn't take...but when i tried the Stand a few years later I got a little obsessed with Kings multiverse and started my trek down the path to the Dark Tower hitting many stops along the way. Most recently Ive read Under the Dome. I had started Rose Madder a few months ago but was too distracted by Joe Abercrombies First Law series to give it the attention it deserves but once the itch to read King again takes hold Ill be all over it.
As of today ive read 44 novels and 8 short story collections.

Earlier fan, but I've gotten burned out on him. He's gotten repetitive and the logorrhea/prolixity that mars a lot of his work hasn't improved much over time. At his best I will gladly concur that he knew his stuff, and though his work has always been dissed by critics as popular junk, he's able to hit a nerve that many a more 'highbrow' author can't begin to. But I don't rush to read his work anymore and when I do read some of the more recent stuff I tend to get a 'been there done that' feeling that generally ends up with my not finishing it.

Sorta tangential, but recently I was reading H.P. Lovecraft biographer S.T. Joshi’s The Modern Weird Tale, and, wow, Joshi despises King. I don’t understand the animosity—neither, apparently, does Joshi, who never gets around to explaining just why he so hates King. His analysis of The Shining is shocking for a guy who critiques horror fiction for a living: He criticizes King for not explaining the haunting. Now, I think explaining the haunting in detail diminishes the horror, but my personal opinions aside, just think how many writers don’t explain their hauntings: Algernon Blackwood, M.R. James, Shirley Jackson, Robert Aickman, etc., etc. The irony is that Joshi likes all these writers—though he does criticize Aickman for a lack of explanation (which he apparently doesn’t understand is the whole point of Aickman). Such an inexplicable criticism.
Joshi has those kinds of weird prejudices and idiosyncrasies, including a tendency to defend his beloved Lovecraft against any charge, no matter how accurate (notably the racism). In Modern Weird Tale he rakes Exorcist writer William Peter Blatty over the coals—but not for any writing flaws but because Blatty was a Catholic.
Not sure why I got so annoyed by Joshi’s book (which is actually filled with good insights into authors Joshi likes). I’m not the world’s biggest King fan, but he deserves better critiques than this.

I’ve only read "Night Shift", "Nightmares & Dreamscapes" (except for that non-fictional baseball-related story at the end—it was boring), "On Writing", "The Green Mile" (when it was originally released as four novellas), "Blaze" (as ‘Richard Bachmann’) & a couple of stories from "Skeleton Crew". I also read the first, maybe, 50 pages of "Carrie" but I abandoned it for some reason and never continued.

Read most and still think he needs a bloody good editor. Mot of his works could be improved by taking out 100 pages. HA !! I think MANY people would agree with you on this......and one of the reasons I MUCH prefer the stories of his novellas ( Different Seasons (1982) is one of my ALL-TIME favorite books of his!), as opposed to his novels !! Can't quite tell if he PURPOSELY 'edits' himself when writing a novella, or just the opposite, and when he knows he's writing a full-blown novel he just doesn't pay much attention to how long the story's going, and does little to no 'editing' of himself as he's writing......that said, The Shining (1977) is the GREATEST !! As I've said before, STILL one of the most 'cinematic' novels I've EVER read..... Different Seasons (1982)The Shining (1977)SAVE FERRIS

Big fan of his earlier books. I keep meaning to read some of his books written this century.

Agreed.....NEVER cared for it either (and you're right, looks MUCH more "Romance", rather than "Horror" novel!) !! However, the (I believe....but not sure) original paperback version of this book, SOMEHOW took BAD (and NOT in the Michael Jackson way !!) to a whole NEW level...... That, in my opinion, is one SORRY book cover, I don't care WHOSE book it's for !! I've NO doubt a High School art student could probably come up with something 10 TIMES more interesting than this "artisitic" travesty.... SAVE FERRIS

Lifelong fan (well, since I first read one of his books, many years ago). Not quite my favorite author, but he's up there. I've easily read more pages of his than any other author. Favorite is The Stand(short version). Like him better when he focuses on the supernatural rather than the thriller, which he seems to be moving toward lately.

I have read 'The Shining' and 'Dr. Sleep', but not read any others.
I have seen 'The Shining' (but not 'Dr. Sleep'), seen 'Carrie', 'Christine', 'Misery' and my all-time favorite King movie 'The Dead Zone'.
