The Black Phone stars Ethan Hawke and will be released next year. TEXT: The Black Phone is based on a 2004 short story by Joe Hill, a.k.a. Stephen King’s son, so there’s a chance some of you know the story, and what to expect. I did not know either though so, as the footage unfurled, I was entranced. The Black Phone is about a young boy who lives in a town where lots of kids have been kidnapped. And so the trailer begins with the boy and a young girl looking at all the sad “Missing” posters around town. They then run into a man who drives a van that says “Abracadabra” on it. This man is played by Ethan Hawke, who worked with Derrickson on Sinister and told audiences at Cinemacon before the trailer ran that, though he has a rule to never play villains, he made an exception for this movie. As the trailer continues, Hawke’s character gets out of his truck (appearing to have some kind of white makeup on), and drops his groceries. The young boy attempts to help him as the man explains he’s a part time magician. A few of his black balloons fly to the sky. The man then says to the boy “Do you want to see a magic trick?” It’s all very Joker. And welp, wouldn’t you know it, that part time magician is the person who has been kidnapping all those kids! We see the boy wake up in some desolate room, with nothing but a bed and a black phone. The magician is standing in the door in a creepy kabuki mask. “The phone doesn’t work,” he tells the boy. Next we see the girl from the beginning explaining that she had a dream about this magician. She mentions the black balloons, which the police admit is not a detail she could have known, suggesting that there’s something more mythical going on here. Back back in captivity, the phone in the boy’s room rings—despite the fact that it’s disconnected, and that the magician said it wouldn’t work. The boy picks up. It’s one of the magician’s victims, calling from beyond the grave, with a clue to how to escape. The boy keeps getting calls from other dead victims, each providing him clues as to how to escape. As this is happening, his young friend is still having dreams about the magician, and the ghosts of the dead kids start showing up there too. All of which leads to the trailer culminating in an escape attempt gone wrong—with lots of screaming, and even more questions. gizmodo.com/the-new-horror-film-from-the-team-behind-sinister-looks-1847561025

Jan of 22 shaping up to be an exciting month for horror fans at the moment
Scream Morbius Black phone
That is if all they three stick wouldn't be shocked to see atleast two out of three move motbius probably can't afford to.move anymore
Scream and/or black phone seem the most likely to move could see both moving to summer
Could easily see Scream moving to October of 22 but it would have to go up against halloween ends
Would suggest early September for one or both but it appears Salems lot has that spot booked for now

Wow, The Black Phone does sound intriguing. Definitely the kind of story Joe's father would have written in his prime.

January and February did used to be the dumping ground for lost causes, but this is a new world of movie releasing. It's a little weird for a Scream movie to not be a big release in a big season, but I think nowadays you can hit at anytime of year.

Might be kind of a spoilery trailer, it's tough to say, but it looks well made and well acted, and it sells the supernatural aspect with enough seriousness. Could be good.

I watched the trailer last night, and wow this sounds like a truly original horror movie. I love Ethan Hawke and can't wait to see him in this role.

Just watched this…thought it was very good. I loved the brother-sister relationship and there are several scenes with lots of tension. Hawke is wonderfully creepy, especially early on. Very good flick.

Very good flick. I just saw it myself. I thought the most of the kids, but especially the sister, carried the film well. Ethan Hawke is good as you'd imagine, but if those kids' performances don't work than the whole thing wouldn't hang together. I suppose some might say it's light on 'scares' but it's a situational and atmospheric movie, and it has more of a creepy factor than it does big scary moments. The production design is great and the period setting helps a lot. I'm not sure this is special, I'd have to give it some time, but it's certainly solid.
