Might be one of the worst places to discuss movies? So much toxicity over there as well.

Some people treat movies like a religion. As I wrote within another thread all I did was post a review for Respect and got downvoted, also got downvoted for asking people what nominations they give favorite actors, and those who followed my lead got downvoted as well

There was always a small enough group of people where you could have a decent discussion about movies or performers with other fans. Movie fandom should be enjoyable, but too many only want to tear everything down with personal insults on top of it. Being hateful and making other miserable are sadly too many people's idea of having fun now.

Agreed sadly, you have certain niche forums, but they are far too concise and barren to really elicit any discussion. And some are very specific and puritanical as far as rules go so yeah.

I got ona royal family page like that, where people only wanted to hear their own opinions repeated. They were like pirhanas when anyone with a different opinion fell into the tank. No fun.

Some people treat movies like a religion. Everything is like a religion now. People aren't that religious anymore but it almost looks like they still feel that obligation to place spiritual value in something. Funny.

I mean, even atheism can be considered a religion.

Reddit doesn't seem like a place for decent discussion. It is like the politics board on steroid.

Some people treat movies like a religion. Less harmful than treating religion as a religion. Millions die that way.

I'm not sure I'd discuss 2+2 on Reddit

Unfortunately, there is a standardized internet forum culture that sees anti-social behavior as cool. This drives away many thoughtful people who, rightly, don't want to subject themselves to abuse. Each forum has a subculture though and great places exist. The members of this board are very polite and considerate. I think this is b/c classic film itself is full of polite behavior and attracts like minded people.
I am always struck when someone on film says "I hope I am not being too impertinent if I ask you a personal question" then, "I noticed that there is a long gap in your employment history" (British film is the most polite). Today, they would just blindside the poor victim by saying "Were you in jail?!!" The loss of politeness in our "in your face" society is the loss I miss the most.
I hope this board never becomes like the rest of the internet.
