What position to draft first? Always depends on the league rules and what pick you have. Its usually a RB but somebody like Travis Kelce gets attention because of how dominant he is at his position. Plus if its a PPR scoring he is extra dominant. If you got a top 5 pick id suggest RB. After that look at guys like Kelce, Davante Adams, Stefon Diggs and grab a RB as it swings back to you in R2.

Same with Carson as long as Carson stays healthy.

For whatever it's worth, and granted I haven't played fantasy football in a few years and am not participating in the board league, I never drafted a RB in the 1st round, no matter what pick I had. I always went for elite WRs first and I always did well in every league I ever played in. Reason being, running backs are so prone to get hurt, to get TDs vultured, to get minimized in high scoring games, etc., that it's just too risky to take with a top pick, especially in a pass-first league. For every season like McCaffrey had in 2019, there are 20 other seasons like what McCaffrey had last year. Plus, with the injuries, you can always grab decent RBs on the waiver wire. Always. They're practically like pitchers in MLB. The lone exception was when we did PPR in the board league a handful of years ago. That definitely changes the draft strategy when someone like Brian Westbrook was the one guy everyone wanted.

Normally I'd agree with klaw's view here (a truly elite WR can definitely be the best option as your first round pick) but I think McCaffrey is absolutely the exception here - he's an elite RB and elite WR rolled into one. He's an entire offense. Every time his team has the ball, you're expecting points from him. Even the few games he played last year, he was a machine. By far the most fun player to own in my limited (four year) experience.
Also - not participating in the board's league either. I'm a one league-only kind of guy - any more would dilute the experience, make it feel like too much work, and essentially ruin the fun of watching football for me.

Not watching football at all for the past 6 years or so probably further clouds my opinion. I only know who McCaffrey is from the scuttlebutt on the board, I even had to look up how to spell his name.

Here's my week one matchup:
My team - Lamar Jackson @ Raiders Terry McLaurin vs Chargers Odell Beckham @ Chiefs Christian McCaffrey vs Jets Kareem Hunt @ Chiefs Darren Waller vs Ravens Gus Edwards @ Raiders Rodrigo Blankenship vs Seahawks Tampa Bay DST vs Cowboys
Taking a flyer on Odell - he needs to prove his health, but I just think the Browns will be behind and throwing a lot. And I want to see what Aiyuk's targets are like with Kittle and Deebo back healthy before I put him in the lineup. Other than that, hopefully I'll be riding the CMC magic carpet to victory.
Here's who my opponent is rolling out:
Aaron Rodgers @ Saints Stefon Diggs vs Steelers Chris Godwin vs Cowboys Ezekiel Elliott @ Buccaneers Clyde Edwards-Helaire vs Browns TJ Hockenson vs 49ers Julio Jones vs Cardinals Greg Zuerlein @ Buccaneers Pittsburgh DST @ Bills
May all his players suck. Good news is that TB are normally dominant against the run so that potentially limits Zeke.

My other fantasy draft starts soon, I am #8, the player at that position is Colts RB Jonathan Taylor. I alternate between fifteen and nine picks apart.

Welp, my fantasy league may have fucked me hard. I hadn't had my phone with me all day. Get to it just now and the draft that was scheduled for tomorrow had all the sudden been moved to 30 minutes from now and I have too much shit to do. I may be at the mercy of the auto draft gods.

I have no idea how you came away with 8 top 45 players.

Yup...my league fucked me. Spring a draft time change on somebody day of and expect everybody to see it. My league is a salary cap league with a dynasty format. You get a $200 budget and 5 keepers from previous drafts are taken out at their drafted prices. I kept Lamar, Aaron Jones, D. Swift, McLaurin, Kittle with about $150 left to spend. To fill 10 spots. The CPU spent fucking $47 leaving me with $103 left up my ass for nothing. I am so damn pissed at this league I might just leave it despite the long standing friendships. Not the first time they fucked me over either. Changed the rules to lessen Lamar's 8mpact after his MVP year simply because it "wasn't fair i had him for $1" meanwhile Kamara has been kept for $1 for 5 years or so. Fuck this league.

That sucks - stuff like that is on the commissioner for sure. There are a couple of guys in my league who whine a lot and want to change the rules depending on what would benefit them and their planned strategy - luckily our commissioner is a great dude and will only make changes if they're wanted by everyone. Changing the draft date on that kind of short notice is really shitty and smacks of trying to fuck people over.

Basically the top shelf QB, WR, RB, TE, K, and DEF are all pretty much equal in scoring points per week/season... I have great RB WR and TE but suck at QB, K, and DEF
