Maybe they always wanted a horse, but there are zoning regulations prohibiting that in many areas.

Those are huge! I had a German shepherd. Not nearly as large as those dogs. I thought him too big. I couldn't walk him. He clearly was able to pull me.
A friend asked if I wanted a puppy. I said yes. I was so stupid. I didn't ask how big he'd get. But Ziggy was the love of my life (pet life). I'm glad I had him

They're just big ol' soppy pooches, that's all. I wouldn't want a big dog if only because they tend to have a shorter lifespan.

Why not? I had a dog as a kid who was pat St. Bernard, she was awesome.
I love small dogs, probably because I always had big dogs as a kid, and they travel well. My next dog will be able to protect me though. I'm thinking a German Shepard or Pittie.

I can't wait to see that! I'm going to take my granddaughter.

I can attest that German Shepherds provide excellent protection. Really? Catman once saw a German Shepherd chased off by a Pomeranian. My best friend had numerous German Shepherds over the years. The latest one lived with me for three weeks in Jan/Feb '21 while my friend was in the hospital. During the day the dog would lie on the bed, but if he heard anything outside he would leap off the bed with a loud thud, all while barking up a storm. Then he would run into my office, and race to the window to look out at the street. So yes, I was well protected from the scourges of delivery men (even those across the street!), city workers talking on their cell phones, etc.
