Fun fact: If one person guesses, he's most likely going to be way off. But if a lot of people guess, the average will be surprisingly close if not accurate.

Brings to mind an episode of Leave It to Beaver. Ward tells the story of when he entered a jelly bean contest. He had purchased a jar and jelly beans so he could count out how many were in the contest jar. He was wrong because they had also put a baseball (the contest prize) inside the jar.

In 3rd grade I won a contest guessing how many seeds were in my class' pumpkin.
It was all downhill from there

I've never tried one of those contests. However, I know that I would way underestimate.
I have some shallow, built-in shelves in my kitchen. I once had a large glass jar/top that was shaped like a mushroom. I layered dried beans of different colors in it, for a great color effect.
We had an earthquake.
I might have guessed (maybe) 2000-3000. I think I vacuumed up 12 gazillion.
