I happened to watch some previews of new films coming out and it struck me that most movies today seem to be a non-stop marathon of anger. People are yelling at each other, getting in each other's face, cussing, hitting each other, or shooting each other. Everyone struts, nobody just walks anymore. Faces are completely twisted with emotion as if it's "final exam" time in acting class. The slightest thing sets people off and it's almost all conflict and no cooperation or understanding. The world always seems to be falling apart (literally with GCI). Things are always crashing and blowing up. I don't know if this is want audiences want but it's what they are getting. I hope it's not a reflection of society.
Bogey was considered a tough guy in his time but I don't remember him yelling so much- I guess emotions were more "under the hood" in those days.

I hope it's not a reflection of society. That is exactly what it is. People are as mad as hell and they don't want to take it any more (to slightly misquote one of the first and best movies on this topic). A few years back, one of our most knowledgeable and popular posters wrote, in effect, that he would henceforth be turning his back on modern movies reflecting contemporary life and would instead bask in the saccharine concoctions of the studio system of earlier decades. He is not alone on this board. Of course that is not to say that older films did not occasionally contains realistic insights and hard truths, but they were generally sidestepped for commercial and political reasons.
