A dead heat - both are excellent.
The earlier film is cooler and Ripley far more calculating - and Delon more of a babe! .....in the later one the murder is "provoked" by the victim. The later one more leisurely (finding time for wonderful Cate Blanchett as Meredith, a character not in the earlier one), sumptuous, plays up the homoerotic aspect and has that truly horrible ending.

Both are very, very good but, for me, "Purple Noon" has the edge. It is more of a classic, more watchable for memorable moments and nuances.

I watched "Purple Noon" only once. From what I remember, it was not stylist as that of Minghella version. I would say Delon probably was a better Ripley than Damon, but I love that later version which is one of my all time favorite movies. The Philip Seymour Hoffman portrayal of Freddie Miles was so fantastic. That said, I should revisit "Purple Noon".

I was unaware of Purple Noon, but I just asked the Netflix Gods to send it my way. I saw TTMR in theater release, so I may have to re-view it to draw a comparison.

Like divital I never knew the talented MR ripley was a remake.
I would like to see Purple Noon but I cannot believe it is a better version than the Minghella version. It’s such a perfect example of the many people who wander through life trying it on, being “as if” . It’s what would happen if such a poseur followed hus/ her presence to the illogical edge

Talented Mr. Ripley is a very good film and it was a favorite of mine for quite some time. PSH as Freddie was excellent.
Purple Noon is a better film though, Delon is excellent as Ripley. I like that a large part of the movie takes place on the yacht.
