In casual film talk this movie is sparsely mentioned as being among the best ever yet it's imdb number 1 rated for 10+ years and probably will be for the next decade. I dont get it, was there some sort of spite campaign from people who voted this as 10/10 over The Godfather which they gave 1/10 because I vaguely remember that from my early days on imdb discussion boards but cannot be sure.
It's a good movie but hard to see why the general consensus is that its a clear #1. It has 2.45 million votes too which is the most on the site, which also seems odd for a movie I wouldnt even put in the top 20 most iconic/popular films in history to garner that many votes.

People seem to forget that IMDB is everybody rating movies, not just critics. This isn't some "professional" list.
From what I have gathered it is one of the most universally loved movies. I have come across more people who dislike The Godfather than The Shawshank Redemption.

The Godfather was #1 for the longest time but then The Dark Knight came out and took its place. Godfather fans got mad and started downvoting TDK, and TDK fans responded in kind. Both succeeded in lowering the other's place allowing Shawshank to rise up and claim the throne.

I would have sworn on my life that The Shawshank Redemption was #1 on the list long before The Dark Knight. I just looked at the record of what was #1 in 2007 and it was The Godfather. I am not even joking. I am actually having a mental crisis right now from the information. This is actually a perfect example of how unreliable memory is.

I know its user generated ratings, but is Shawshank really universally loved to the degree that IMDB is saying with being #1 with the most votes ever over a long period of time? Maybe its just me but my observations either from real life or online, whether they be twitter movie polls or hastag trends of best movies ever, I rarely see Shawshank Redemption brought up. The social/cultural view I see is a lot more people talk about the Godfather in those circles over Shawshank Redemption (im not saying Godfather should be #1 btw)

I do remember some tomfoolery on the boards when TDK was released on how groups of people where targetting the ratings of the top 5 movies around that time. But still doesn't explain how Shawshank Redemption has the most votes of all the films on the site. Maybe salty TDK fans voted Shawshank Redemption 10/10 and Godfather1/10 to demote Godfather from #1. But then that ended up with Shawshank Redemption overtaking TDK which ends up working against them.

That's what a lot of people don't seem to get. I'm willing to guess that more people consider The Godfather their favorite movie than Shawshank, but you'll also probably find more people that dislike The Godfather (it's long, slow, and boring to some people).

But in this case, I remember like it was yesterday: Interestingly, Shawshank had the most votes even then.

The only movie i remember seeing as number 1 on the top 250 movie list on IMDB is The Shawshank Redemption, I had to look it up to see if what you said is true and it is. Its really strange i could have sworn that the only movie that have been number 1 is The Shawshank Redemption As far as i could find the first IMDB top 250 movies was in 1996 and as far as i could see only three movies have topped the list. The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather and Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Of course i did not really look that deep into it, so it may not be 100% accurate.

It’s been number one on IMDb for 13 or so years, and it seems unlikely to lose its spot anytime in the near future. I’m not sure why it has so many votes, though.

People highly enjoyed it. I'd say that's enough of a reason for fans to vote it so highly.

Probably because most of the people who go on IMDB are Millenials who grew up up with 90s/2000s cinema, so statistically a lot of 90s/2000s films are gonna get higher rankings (TDK,LOTR, MAtrix, Goodfellas, Fight Club, and Inception are also on there). When you adjust for age, movies like It's a Wonderful Life, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, and Casablanca would probably rank a lot higher. With that in mind though, Shawshank Redemption does seem a bit random, I mean I'm sure it's a fine movie, but does it have anywhere near the same cultural relevance as 90s films like Schindler's List, Pulp Fiction, or Forrest Gump?

I remember the Shawshank Fanboys from the Old IMDB.
I don't know all the intricacies for creating multiple accounts but I've always suspected a lot of the films rabid cheerleaders were doing just that to continually pump up the ratings. Sounds improbable that they would keep it up all these years, but recalling their comments (which amounted to a mania), I can't say I'd be surprised.
It's a good movie and I catch it now and then when it's on cable, but it's nowhere near as good as proclaimed.

It is a universally loved film. I remember reading articles about how it slowly found a massive audience on home video formats after being relatively unsuccessful at the Box Office. Interesting compared to the Letterboxd list. It's #13. Parasite is #1 The Godfather is #4 The Godfather Part II is #5 The Dark Knight is #18

Now I've read everything surrounding film fandom.

Not everyone loves Shawshank:
Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
The Shawshank Redemption (1994) - 2.5 out of 4 stars
"Straight-arrow banker Robbins is railroaded for a double murder and sent to prison for life in the late 1940's. Fellow lifer Freeman and his buddies eventually come to admire Robbins' moral code--and his ability to get things done, in spite of a heinous warden and brutal prison guard. Widely praised film is well-crated but terribly overlong, and (like much of Stephen King's non-horror writing) hollow and predictable. First-time feature director Darabont adapted King's novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption."
