The only movie i remember seeing as number 1 on the top 250 movie list on IMDB is The Shawshank Redemption, I had to look it up to see if what you said is true and it is. Its really strange i could have sworn that the only movie that have been number 1 is The Shawshank Redemption As far as i could find the first IMDB top 250 movies was in 1996 and as far as i could see only three movies have topped the list. The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather and Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Of course i did not really look that deep into it, so it may not be 100% accurate. In addition to TDK, Fellowship of the Ring was also #1 when it first came out. Oh yeah, I remember that.

IMDb is a type of flawed democracy given that ratings from critics and film lovers are in the same league as trolls who rate on extremes despite not having watched the title.

I love the film and rated it 10/10 so i'm happy with it being at the top of the pile.

The Godfather was #1 for the longest time but then The Dark Knight came out and took its place. Godfather fans got mad and started downvoting TDK, and TDK fans responded in kind. Both succeeded in lowering the other's place allowing Shawshank to rise up and claim the throne. The Dark Knight fans started the downvoting, they didn't achieve #1 until their campaign of downvoting other films in the top ten kicked into high gear. I was on the TDK board back then, I remember the threads encouraging people to give TDK a 10 and Godfather a 1. Both are obviously great films, it was embarrassing to see fans of either film behaving that way.

Not everyone loves Shawshank: Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: The Shawshank Redemption (1994) - 2.5 out of 4 stars"Straight-arrow banker Robbins is railroaded for a double murder and sent to prison for life in the late 1940's. Fellow lifer Freeman and his buddies eventually come to admire Robbins' moral code--and his ability to get things done, in spite of a heinous warden and brutal prison guard. Widely praised film is well-crated Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption." I think as well as well-crated...it was quite well-crafted.
