I'd never heard anything suggesting that it has ominous overtones. From Google search "Carol of the Bells Folklore," I learned that that the Christmas lyrics were adapted from an old Ukrainian folk song, which told of a swallow flying into homes as a sign of good luck and fortune when the Spring season was about to begin. I suppose that birds flying into one's home could be considered to be a little weird. However, a harbinger of luck and fortune, sounds pretty good.
