Another possession storyline? Rumour has it Doug is possessed and it's trying to get to Marlena.
I don't even know what to think but I am excited!

On the one hand, I definitely question if that's the best or most practical use for Bill Hayes, who's now 96 (albeit, an amazingly well maintained and aged 96). On the other hand, if I were Bill and still had whatever vitality he still has to put in that type of performance, and especially if he hasn't had a lot of opportunities to go full tilt crazy with his characters and chew the scenery, I'd be hard pressed to say no. Like, I have no proactive interest in wearing a corset, and the writing for Rocky Horror is just weird, to say the least, but if I were the afford the part of Dr. Frank N Furter, I can't see how I could turn it down; it's too crazy of a role and probably a once in a lifetime opportunity to pass up.

Also, I'm not the least bit surprised that they'd touch on a storyline that might look, initially, like Doug is just suffering the rigors of age, like dimentia or something; only for some miraculous copout that lets him go back to normal after a while.

I have mild hope this will be done well. I am excited about the stuff about Johnny's movie and I wonder if looking into all the backstories is what brings about the possession x2.
I am a little surprised that they chose Doug to resurrect this, so to speak...I just hope they don't kill off Doug like this. Bill Hayes deserves a better send off than Death By Devil.

I really enjoyed the possession storyline on Days. It was very well done and reminded me a little of Dark Shadows. I like the idea that Salem would have Supernatural activity in the town. I know it turned off a lot of Days fans, but it did keep audiences hooked to their TVs back then.

I don't know. They've sort of revisited once or twice; once for sure when they were... checking that Marlena wasn't the devil when they found out she was the Salem Stalker, but I think there might have been one other time it came up, but I can't remember if that is the case or when it might have been. It just seemed... off... at least that one other time (and that's also why I feel like it came up a second time, because the inclusion in the Salem Stalker storyline was very brief, and I feel like there was maybe something with it that went deeper, but it just didn't land. Again, I don't recall for sure and that may be completely wrong.)
I didn't see a whole lot of the original storyline; a lot of my family was watching it, and I had grown up with the show, as it was my dad's soap (which he's since denies). Looking back on it though, for a show that is... more or less "grounded"... 🤷‍♂️ - I feel like it might have been more effective, and perhaps turned less people off, if they had kept it more ambiguous. Like, I enjoy a good sci-fi or supernatural story, but if it's not an inherent conceit of the narrative; and ultimately you want it to go back living in the everyday, mundane world, I think the thrill of that type of story works better if can give the audience just enough to wonder which perspective is correct. Like, is she really possessed or is she just having a psychotic break; and teasing both possibilities, maybe giving a little more credence to the distinct probability that she's actually possessed, but never explicitly (at least to the majority of characters) confirming that, so that there's room for doubt.
Sure, the story as written brought viewers in, but I think it was more the sensationalizing/novelty that, if you don't have something of quality or substance to back it up afterwards, that bump isn't going to sustain interest; and will invariably turn people away - either because it's too much of a departure from those already invested in the story, or the follow-up isn't able to keep the interest of enough of the people the spectacle brought in. And I think that's exactly what happened with Days.

Plus, JER was such a hack, I don't think I could ever bring myself to giving him any kind of credit for anything...

Story revealed today - Doug and Marlena had a scene together and John was looking at news clippings from the possession.
I agree this might not keep viewers but it's hokey and I love it! I hope it pans out and they don't just show scenes of everyone TALKING about them being possessed. I want some levitation!

For some reason or another, it seems like there’s a real attempt to get the show back on track. With the two year deal, I think they’re creating some buzz again. Beyond Salem may not have been great, but things actually happened. I guess we’ll see how it pans out. But, the ratings are improving and the pacing is getting better.
